On the final night of the boys basketball regular season…
- L’Anse lost to Bessemer 67-48.
In girls action last night…
- Houghton fell to Marquette 61-48. Eva Gerard had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Gremlins, and Ellie Hainault added 16 points. Aubree Blackburn scored 16 for the Sentinels.
- Calumet built an early lead, and cruised past Lake Linden-Hubbell 67-50. The Copper Kings were up by 13 at halftime. Jackie Kiilunen scored 21 for Calumet, and Bailey Strom added 20. Emily Jokela netted 20 for the Lakes. Hear the game replay here.
- Ishpeming downed Hancock 58-42.
- Jeffers thumped Wakefield-Marenisco 62-22.
- Ontonagon got past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 41-33.
College Hockey

Alex Nordstrom’s natural hat trick powered the Michigan Tech hockey team to a 6-1 victory over Ferris State last night. Goals by Max Koskipirtti and Isaac Gordon had given the Huskies an early lead when the former Hancock Bulldog netted three straight, including a short-hander. Gordon’s second tally of the night closed out the scoring. Ryan Manzella made 24 saves. Those teams play again tonight at 6:07 at the SDC. It’s the final home game of the season for Tech.
The NMU hockey squad fell 3-0 to St. Thomas last night. Ryan Ouellette made 35 saves for the Wildcats. Those teams face off again tonight, in Northern’s final home game.
College Basketball
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams will play at Roosevelt University in Chicago today.
Both NMU teams have the weekend off.
Nordic Skiing
The Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan Nordic ski teams will compete in the NCAA Central Regional Championships this weekend. The event is being hosted by the Wildcats on the Al Quaal Trails in Ishpeming. Events include a 7.5K classic today, and a 20K skate tomorrow.
Great Lakes Hockey League
The Portage Lake Pioneers shaded the De Pere Deacons 4-3 in a shootout last night. The Pioneers visit the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tonight.
The Calumet Wolverines pounded the Sun Prairie Killer Bees 14-4 last evening. Matt Yeo scored four goals and Dylan Boberg added a hat trick. The Wolverines visit the Dane County Dairy Kings this evening.
NBA
The Pistons returned from the All-Star break with a 125-110 victory over the Spurs last night. Cade Cunningham had 25 points and 12 assists. Tobias Harris added 22, and Jalen Duren scored 21 and grabbed 15 rebounds.
The Pistons visit the Hawks tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 5:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks shaded the Wizards 104-101. Kyle Kuzma scored 19 for Milwaukee.
The Bucks entertain the Heat tomorrow.
NHL
The Red Wings return to the ice today, as they host the Wild. Coverage will begin at 12:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
The Tigers open their Grapefruit League season this afternoon against the Phillies. Kenta Maeda will start against Nabil Crismatt.
Detroit outfielder Akil Baddoo will miss all of spring training and the start of the regular season after undergoing surgery to repair a broken bone in his right hand. Baddoo is in camp as a non-roster invitee, after having been designated for assignment back in December.
The Brewers begin their Cactus League campaign against the Reds today. Carlos Rodriguez will pitch against Graham Ashcraft.
Milwaukee added some outfield depth by signing journeyman Manuel Margot to a minor league deal. Margot batted .238 for the Twins last season.
Youth Hockey
The Copper Country Junior Hockey Association is asking for help to send two of its teams to the state finals next weekend. The Portage Lake Flyers 10U and 12U AA teams are holding a returnables drive. Drop your contributions off at the trailer in the Festival Foods parking lot in Houghton today.
