Boys high school basketball brackets were released yesterday. The tournament begins next week. Houghton will open Wednesday at home against Negaunee, with coverage on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Calumet will debut Monday at West Iron County, with coverage on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. Division Four play opens Monday. In District 98, Lake Linden-Hubbell will play at Chassell, and L’Anse will host Hancock. In District 97, Ontonagon will entertain Watersmeet. Calumet claimed the championship at the U.P. JV Hockey Tournament over the weekend. The Copper Kings outscored Marquette 5-1 in the title match. Houghton defeated Hancock 4-2 in the consolation game.
The varsity regional hockey tournament opens Wednesday. Houghton faces Hancock at 5:00, and Calumet takes on Jeffers at 7:00. Doubleheader coverage will begin at 4:40 on KBear 102.3.
The Houghton ski team will compete at the UP Finals at Pine Mountain today.
College Skiing
The Michigan Tech Nordic ski teams won the Butch Reimer Cup as CCSA Champions yesterday. The Huskies claimed the men’s, women’s, and overall team titles at the Tech Trails. Bridget Burns and Tryg Solberg were individual conference champions.
In yesterday’s classic competition, Northern Michigan’s Adrik Kraftson and Luke Fricker finished first and second in the men’s senior 7.5k, with Tech’s Wes Campbell placing third. Huskies claimed four of the top five positions in the women’s 7.5k, with Burns medaling and Greta Hanson second. Former Husky Anabel Needham placed third. Olavi Lautila of the Copper Country Ski Tigers earned a sixth-place finish in the U14 3k, with teammates Nolan Webb, Oskar McCloud and Maxwell Webb immediately following.
Saturday was freestyle day. Tech skiers Solberg and Colin Freed placed first and second in the men’s senior 20k, with Kraftson from NMU fourth. Northern’s Victoria Dybwad won the women’s senior 20k, with Burns, Hansen and Alice McNight of the Huskies finishing third, fourth and fifth. Gideon Talbot of the Copper Country Ski Tigers took third place in the boys U14 3k.
