Snowboarding in downtown Houghton took a ten-year break before returning in 2023. The electric atmosphere of the event brings hundreds of spectators, professional snowboarders, and Redbull as a sponsor to downtown Houghton. Visit Keweenaw’s Jesse Wierderhold says the event will debut Redbull’s best stomp, which has been seen in other sports, such as mountain biking, the company has put on.
So what happened is this year they’re coming in with the best stomp feature. So it’ll be for men’s and women’s, whoever can land like the sickest landing, right? A smooth, clean landing after their trick. So this is unique to Houghton. This is the first time they’re doing it in a snow sport. So as I mentioned, Red Bull has done the best stomp a lot in their rampages, right, with the bikes. So this is the first time it’s being done for snowboards. So that is very exciting comparing it to even just events that are happening in Michigan and Duluth. Red Bull has their heavy metal competition so this is an urban snowboard competition. They have them in downtowns so to have them come in in a greater capacity that just looks good for Houghton. – Jesse Wiederhold, Visit Keweenaw
The Copper Country has shown a love for the snowboard event, says Wierdehold, just as the community enjoys many other winter sports recreation. The city of Houghton will limit traffic near the course over the weekend, in preparation for the event starting tomorrow at 6 pm.
While Huron Street is closed off for jibba jabba, Houghton has posted a notice for traffic, pedestrians, and snowmobilers. On Saturday the parking lot between the waterfront pier and U.P. kids will be closed off to prepare for jibba jabba. Soumi Restaurant and Citrus Saloon will still be open during the day. The city will also close the snowmobile trails between Bridgeview Park and the lakeshore center from 5 to 9 pm on Saturday. To cross the bridge snowmobiles will need to access the crossing from the west side, on trail 3.
