Jibba Jabba’s course appears almost as quickly as the Huron Street snow hill disappears. The Houghton Department of Public Works will close Huron Street today to construct the snow course for the weekend’s event. Visit Keweenaw Marketing and Events Coordinator Jesse Wiederhold says the crews work quickly, and move snow from around the city to create the course.
So last year we had to kind of bring it in from surrounding communities, even I’ll say as far as South Range, getting some of that white snow into town. This year, I was just in town Monday. The big snow piles are already there. They’ve been just pushing it where they can, storing it around Houghton to push it all downtown onto Huron Street for Friday. So they’ll start that by the end of this week. They got to pack that snow base from the Soumi down to the lakeshore and they have to build these tricks, these courses. So Red Bull will be bringing a few features too. – Jesse Wiederhold, Visit Keweeenaw
While Huron Street is closed off for Jibba Jabba, Houghton has posted a notice for traffic, pedestrians, and snowmobilers. On Saturday the parking lot between the waterfront pier and U.P. Kids will be closed off to prepare for Jibba Jabba. Soumi Restaurant and Citrus Saloon will still be open during the day. The city will also close the snowmobile trails between Bridgeview Park and the Lakeshore Center from 5 to 9 pm on Saturday. To cross the bridge snowmobiles will need to access the crossing from the west side, on trail 3.
