L’Anse council approves a loan that will cover the village’s match portion of a grant to upgrade the community electrical system. Last night village manager Bob LaFave informed the council WPPI has approved the village for a 0 percent interest loan that will cover the 100,000 dollar match portion for a grant. The village will pay off the loan over ten years. In the summer the village will start a major upgrade project to compartmentalize the system’s grid.
This is different from the AMI initiative. This is for the 39 poles we’ll be replacing along the Bayshore and the work on the new service and transformer for the MDOT garage. We’re going to add to the North circuit as well as part of this project so we can further compartmentalize it. So if for some reason, let’s say a branch knocks out a power line in an area, it would further segregate that area of the system and just close down maybe that block or two that might be affected as opposed to losing larger parts of the circuit. So we have it broken down in a few spots in the north end of town, but this will allow us to take that particular portion and take it offline and leave the rest of the town on if need be if there’s something that happens. The whole idea is to add more resiliencies to the system. – Bob LaFave, Village Manager, Village of L’Anse
Other items included reports by department heads updating councilors on how snow removal and other tasks around town have progressed in the past two weeks. Council President Ron Ervast encouraged the community to stay excited about recent snowfall helping local businesses through winter and to look forward to the upcoming Old Timers Hockey Tournament on March 1st and 2nd.
