For five decades Canal Run has kept the Copper Country running up the hill (or the slight incline as runners reach the final stretch entering downtown Hancock). The annual running/walking event turns fifty officially in 2025. Today organizers will host a special birthday party to help build excitement ahead of the race in the summer.
So there’s quite a few sponsors involved with Canal Run each and every year. And what’s great is that we’re able to give people the opportunity. These businesses and organizations can give a monetary donation. But we also do in-kind support too. So like Calumet Floral and Gift they’ll give these amazing bouquets to the overall winners in each race. The Keweenaw Co-op typically has done a monetary donation. But there are so many (organizations) involved in so many tremendous ways. – Angela Luskin, Race Director, Canal Run
Luskin adds that U.P. kids will benefit from the Canal Run Gives Back program. The program helps raise funds for a local non-profit organization through registration fees for racers. With the Gives Back part of the race, the canal run has spread more than 30,000 dollars throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula.
So Canal Run Gives Back has help spread over 30,000 dollars in the community. And the 2025 recipient is going to be U.P. Kids, which we’re so excited about. But we’d love to talk to other organizations that could benefit from support of Canal Run, and this is another opportunity to open those channels of communication. – Angela Luskin, Race Director, Canal Run
Race Director Angela Luskin says the opportunity will allow interested sponsors, volunteers, and participants to meet and mingle while learning more about this year’s event.
It may seem early since we are still in February, we’re five months out from the Canal Run. But you’re right, especially those long distances, it takes a certain time commitment, and preparation to make that race go smoothly. So being a part of this event, meeting like-minded people that may be starting the same training program. Finding that running group, walk support group, it’s huge, it helps to motivate us can make that training for the Canal Run that much more fun. – Angela Luskin, Race Director, Canal Run
Today’s Canal run 50th birthday celebration will begin at 4 pm inside the Orpheum Theater in Hancock. Find more information about Canal Run online at Canal.Run.
