Laurium began work after a fire at the DPW garage last week. After a fire broke out at the Laurium Department of Public Works garage early Wednesday morning, village leaders have worked to find a temporary home for the department. Through numerous online posts, Village Manager Ian Lewis informed residents that the village has graciously accepted some equipment from nearby municipalities so DPW workers can provide some snow removal services. Laurium did lose most of its heavy equipment in the fire.

On February 5th, the Laurium Department of Public Works garage caught fire. Crews extinguished the flames by mid-morning. The incident remains under investigation.
On Saturday, the village was able to reopen access to the George Gipp Ice Arena and clean up a temporary home for the DPW. Lewis thanked the many volunteers from the local area who helped Laurium set up shop, which took approximately one and a half hours. The project included moving in loaned equipment from Copper Country municipalities and donations to make the temporary work garage feel like a welcoming space to the crew.
Last week, the village announced that garbage services would continue as normal on Tuesday this week. Addresses with Thursday pick-ups will move to Friday. The Village of Laurium will use a temporary garbage schedule while leaders work on a more permanent solution.
Police lines remain in place around the fire site. Do Not Cross Police Lines. The fire remains under investigation by the Laurium Police Department.
Lewis expects the village will see several changes over the next few months, and ask the community to bear with leaders as Laurium moves forward. Village councilors and administrators will continue to provide vital information to residents on plans, updates, and changes. The next village council meeting will ta
ke place on February 18th at 6 pm.
