High School
In hockey Saturday…
- Jeffers blew past Gladwin 10-5. Benton Rajala had a hat trick plus two assists for the Jets. Brit Heinonen had two goals and four assists. Easton Therrian scored twice, and Cam Anderson, Cody Turner and Max Nordstrom added one goal each. Blake Heltunen had three assists. Kasen Helminen made 47 saves. Isaac Wheeler scored four goals for the Flying G’s.
Great Lakes Hockey League
The Portage Lake Pioneers shaded the Eagle River Falcons 5-4 in a shootout Saturday night.
The Calumet Wolverines have the weekend off.
College Hockey
Elias Jansson’s hat trick wasn’t enough, as the Michigan Tech hockey team fell to Bemidji State 6-5 in overtime Saturday night. Jansson’s third goal with 20 second remaining in regulation forced the extra period. Max Koskipirtti and Alex Nordstrom also scored for Tech. Ryan Manzella gave up three goals in the first period, and was replaced by Derek Mullahy. Jackson Jutting netted the game-winner for the Beavers, as they completed a Winter Carnival sweep of the Huskies, and claimed the MacInnes Trophy. Jansson was named the series’ Most Valuable Player.
Grayden Slipec’s overtime goal gave Northern Michigan a 3-2 victory over Lake Superior State Saturday. Rasmus Larsson and Anthony Cliche scored for the Wildcats in regulation, and Ryan Ouellette made 42 saves. Despite the loss, the Lakers retained the Cappo Cup, with a 3-1 advantage in the season series.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team rebounded from a slow start, but ultimately fell to Saginaw Valley State 56-49 Saturday. Kendall Standfest led the Huskies with 18 points.
Gabe Smith scored a career-best 18 points in his first college start, as the Huskies men’s team defeated the Cardinals 78-73. Marcus Tomashek led MTU with 25 points. Tech remains tied with Lake Superior State for the GLIAC lead.
The Northern Michigan women’s team got past Wayne State 66-61 Saturday. Abi Fraaza led a balanced Wildcats attack with 15 points.
The NMU men’s squad defeated the Warriors by an identical 66-61 margin. Jackson Dudek scored a season-high 18 points.
NHL
The Red Wings dropped a 6-3 decision to the Lightning Saturday afternoon. Detroit got goals from Vladimir Teresenko, Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat. Alex Lyon gave up two goals in the first three minutes, and was relieved by Cam Talbot.
The Wings will be off for the next two weeks, as the NHL pauses to allow players to compete in the 4 Nations Face-Off.
NBA
The Pistons welcome the Hornets this afternoon. Coverage will begin at 12:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
NFL
The Chiefs and Eagles play in the Super Bowl tonight, with coverage on 99.3 The Lift.
Former Lions player and longtime NFL coach Dick Jauron has died. Jauron spent eight seasons as a safety and put returner for Detroit and Cincinnati. He made the Pro Bowl in 1974. He spent some time as an assistant coach and interim head coach in the Motor City, a long stretch as defensive backs coach for the Packers, and a decade as head coach of the Bears and the Bills. Jauron was 74, and had been battling cancer.
Nordic Skiing
The annual Barneløpet today features Nordic ski races for children ages three through 17 at the Maasto Hiihto Trails. Registration begins at 1:00 in the chalet in Hancock. Races start at 2:00. There is no charge.
