Time is running out for the community to nominate impactful projects, innovative businesses, and special individuals from the Copper Country. Next Wednesday the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce, Keweenaw Young Professionals, Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance, and Copper Shores Community Health Foundation Sparkplug committee will close nominations for the 2025 awards.
It’s a best practice in communities to celebrate your community and its successes, its businesses, its citizens, and its organizations. So this is an opportunity and we’ve been doing this since I think going back to 2012. So again, it’s a chance for us as a community to look out and bring to the attention of everyone else those folks and those companies and organizations and individuals that have made a difference. – Jeff Ratcliffe, Executive Director, Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance
In the past few years, Sparkplug Awards have highlighted the region’s economic growth and dedication to developing spaces, projects, and programs to enhance the community’s prosperity. KEDA Executive Director Jeff Ratcliffe says it’s wonderful to have seen incredible individuals and groups receive deserved recognition.
It seems like every year we get more and more nominations for each of the categories. But honestly, once the chamber gets them organized, again, there are always multiple nominations, oftentimes for certain categories for certain people or businesses or organizations. So it distills down. And honestly, I think… after sometimes there’s a need to have a discussion but oftentimes it sort of speaks for itself. – Jeff Ratcliffe, Executive Director, Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance
The Sparkplug awards evening continues to grow in size too, and has packed one of the area’s largest venues. The MUB ballroom.
I think every year it’s fun just to see the turnout because our turnout has grown every year, in fact to the point where we now, you know, we are filling the largest venue we have in our community and we have to turn people away. And to me that is, that’s a sign that this is a good thing, that we are moving the needle. That we’re, by recognizing people and organizations and companies and our community is turning out for that we’re doing the right thing. – Jeff Ratcliffe, Executive Director, Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance
The Sparkplug Award ceremony spectacle highlights some of the biggest and most impactful projects, businesses, and individuals working through the Keweenaw Peninsula in the past year. Tickets for the Sparkplug Awards cost 60 dollars for a single ticket or 400 dollars for a table. Sparkplug Awards will take place at the Memorial Union Building on Michigan Technological University’s campus on March 20th, 2025.
