In high school hockey last night…
- Calumet spotted Negaunee an early lead, then cruised to a 9-1 victory in a game that ended midway through the third period because of the mercy rule. Erik Loukus had two goals and two assists. Liam Pomroy and Brendan Boberg each had two goals and one assist. Nathan Londo, Nate Keranen and Ben Anderson also found the net. Jacob Garrow stopped 21 shots to earn the win in net.

In boys basketball last evening…
- Houghton shaded Negaunee 65-64. Luke Hill scored 23 points for the Gremlins, Isaiah Lawson added 17, and Lane Laux 14.
- Calumet edged L’Anse 56-55. Trent Halonen paced the Copper Kings with 17 points, Gavin Sturos added 16, and Micah Pieti had 13. Sam Lee scored 33 for the Purple Hornets.
- Jeffers outscored Hancock 57-29.
- Forest Park defeated North Dickinson 69-58.
- West Iron County got past Gwinn 43-42.
In girls action…
- Hancock shut down West Iron County 42-25.
- L’Anse dispatched Ontonagon 72-33.
- Forest Park fell to Munising 66-44.

Marquette continued its dominance of the high school ski season by sweeping the conference meet at Norway yesterday.
- The Houghton boys took second in both the slalom and the giant slalom. Eli Heathman claimed individual honors in the giant slalom, and Jack Haeussler logged a sixth place individual finish in the slalom.
- The Houghton girls finished third in the slalom, and fourth in the giant slalom. Rachel Sun finished 10th in each event.

The Houghton swim team competes at Marquette this afternoon.
Calumet volleyball standout Maddie Torola will be joining the team at Michigan Tech. She will officially sign a letter of intent this morning at the school gym. This season, Torola led the team in kill efficiency (.236), blocks/set (.42), and aces/set (.82). She was a West PAC 1st team selection, MIVCA All-Region, and 1st team All-State in Division 3.
Dollar Bay student athlete Joshua Gaunt has been awarded one of this year’s MHSAA/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. Gaunt has competed in cross country, basketball, golf and track since his freshman year. He’s also serving his fourth term on the student council, and is president of the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society. He plans to attend Michigan Technological University and study mechanical engineering. He’s one of 32 scholarship winners statewide.
College Basketball
For the fourth time this season, Michigan Tech guard Marcus Tomashek has been honored as the GLIAC Men’s Offensive Basketball Player of the Week. Tomashek scored 60 points in the Huskies’ wins over Davenport and Grand Valley State last weekend.

NBA
Trae Young’s rainbow shot from just inside the three-point line with 1.6 seconds remaining gave the Hawks a 132-130 victory over the Pistons last night. Cade Cunningham had 30 points and 14 assists for Detroit, and Tobias Harris added 22 points.
The Pistons host the Cavaliers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
Pitcher Alex Faedo is no longer a Tiger. With no minor league options available, the Tigers had designated the former first-round draft pick for assignment last week to clear roster space for reliever Tommy Kahnle. They wound up trading Faedo to the Rays yesterday in exchange for Minor League catcher Enderson Delgado and some cash.
The Tigers have named Gabe Alvarez as the new manager of their Toledo Mud Hens Triple-A farm club. Alvarez spent the last three seasons piloting Detroit’s Double-A Erie Seawolves. He played for Detroit in the late ’90s.
