When MTU students recently lost their homes to a tragic fire the community stepped up to help. The university was able to situate students in empty dorm spaces. The community helps students find clothes, toiletries, and other items they need to start their lives after a fire.
We were able to help all nineteen residents and gave out about nine thousand dollars to them so that they could go get new clothes new shoes jackets whatever they needed take just get them started back and I mean just imagine you lost all of your pots in your pans, anything in a home that you would have computers, books. Michigan Tech was amazing to get them relocated so quickly so that nobody was left out in the cold. – Annette Butina, firefighter/emt, Adams Township Fire Department
The students benefitted from the community’s support through the local police and fire relief fund. On Saturday the area will work to resupply the fund during the annual pigs n heat hockey fundraiser.
The A team is made up of all of our firefighters and police officers who skate on a normal basis. And they do a great job. And then you have your B team, which is a little bit more… not very good on the ice. They may not play hockey at all, and the first time they’ve been on the ice. And it is a ton of fun to watch them try to get from one end of the ice to the other, for a lack of better words. But it is a great way for all of us, as first responders, to get together and play hockey against each other and just have a wonderful evening with our community. – Annette Butina, firefighter/emt, Adams Township Fire Department
Along with the fun happening on the ice, the copper country police and Fire Relief Fund will host a kid’s zone, raffle drawings, and more fun around the John MacInnes Ice Arena.
But you can get tickets right at the door. That ticket gets you into the door and it also gets you into the 99 different gifts and prizes that have been donated by our community. We have some gifts. We have over $3950 in cash prizes that we’re going to be giving out. We’ve got some special raffles that you’re able to get into, like and we have a signed hockey puck from the Red Wings that was given to us to raffle off. We have a Michigan Tech jersey and hockey stick, we have timber rattlers, a special raffle that people can get into. We have a little kid zone where kids can come. – Annette Butina, firefighter/EMT, Adams Township Fire Department.
Tickets can be purchased at the door, or individuals can find tickets at local fire and police departments. Adult tickets will cost $5, and kids tickets cost one dollar. Doors for the evening will open at 4;30 pm. Those interested in learning more about the Copper Country Pigs and Heat fundraiser can learn here.
