William Lewis, resident of Hancock, passed away at his home on January 18, 2025.
William “Bill” Lewis was born on October 23, 1939, in Hancock, MI to W. Allen and Bertha Lewis. He was a graduate of Lake Linden High School and was a member of the football team. As a result of his high achievement, he was awarded the Benedict Scholarship to further his education at Michigan Tech for his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Chemical Engineering. He participated in an advanced study thereafter at the University of Massachusetts.
Bill was employed as a Chemical Engineer in several locations before settling in Illinois in the 1980s. His heart was always in the UP and returned in the late 1990s.
He was married to Kathryn Huovinen and raised two children, Jason and Michelle. Bill enjoyed frequent trips to the Copper Country when he lived away to spend time at his camp in Point Mills. Always the carpenter, he built a sauna at his Illinois home to have a piece of the UP with him. The family always looked forward to fishing, water sports, campfires, playing cribbage, and family time at Point Mills. Last summer, he enjoyed a campfire with his daughter, son-in-law (Barry), and grandchildren, carrying on the traditions he loved.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Allen, Raymond, Donald, sister Barbara, sisters-in-law; Barb and Barbara, and his dear son Jason.
He is survived by his daughter, Michelle, and granddaughters; Avery, Taylor, and Payton. He is also survived by his siblings; Robert, Jerry (Vicki), Greg (Kathy), Rosella Abramson (Art), and Shirley Baril (Terry), plus many nieces and nephews.
