The Keweenaw Health Foundation announces a 3500 dollar gift to support music education for youth in the Copper Country.
Last Friday the Keweenaw Health Foundation announced it will gift 3500 dollars to the Dan Schmitt Gift of Music and Outdoor Education Fund.
The contribution will support the fund’s continued mission to provide free instruments, music lessons, and after-school or outdoor programming to Keweenaw Peninsula and Kalamazoo youth. The Dan Schmidt Gift of Music was created in 2007 following the passing of Dan Schmitt in a traffic accident. His close friends John, Carmane Parsons, and his children John, Ben, and Graham created the music program to continue Schmitt’s passion for music and working with young people. The fund’s emphasis on music and outdoor recreation provides youth opportunities to explore creativity and create lifelong memories and skills.
38 students in the Keweenaw Peninsula participate in the Christmas gift of music programs. Executive Director of the KHF Executive Director Jenn Janich-Laplander says she was lucky enough to grow up hearing Dan’s passion for music and the outdoors and is proud to help continue his legacy in the local community with the Keweenaw Health Foundation’s support.
