High School
In high school hockey Saturday…
- Houghton blanked Northville 2-0. Noah Maillette gave the Gremlins an early lead, and Jay Halonen added an insurance tally early in the third period. Brycyn Nettel made 15 saves to earn his second shutout of the season.
- Hancock lost 3-1 to Byron Center at the Soo Showcase.
- Jeffers lost to Grandville 6-4.
The Houghton swim team at the Marquette Splash event Saturday – no report.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team slipped past 12th-ranked Minnesota State 1-0 Saturday night. Isaac Gordon scored the game-winner 1:45 into overtime. Ryan Manzella made 31 saves, to earn his second career shutout.
Northern Michigan completed a weekend sweep at Bemidji State with a 3-1 victory Saturday night. All three Wildcats’ goals came in the middle period. After winning just one game in their first 20 to start the season, NMU has claimed three of its last four. Goaltender Ryan Ouellette made 33 saves, and also recorded an assist.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team got past Wayne State 76-67 Saturday. All five starters scored in double figures, led by Kendall Standfest’s 16 points.
The Tech men’s team remained unbeaten at home, with a 74-68 win over the Warriors. Marcus Tomashek scored 32.
The Northern Michigan women’s squad lost 67-51 to Saginaw Valley State Saturday. Sarah Newcomer led the Wildcats with 10 points.
The NMU men used a strong second half to dispatch the Cardinals 75-62. Julien Smith netted 17 for the Wildcats, and Sam Privet added 16.
NHL
The Lightning struck down the Red Wings 5-1 Saturday. Lucas Raymond scored Detroit’s lone goal. Cam Talbot gave up all five Tampa Bay goals over the first two periods, and was relieved by Alex Lyon.
The Wings host the Stars tonight.
With Lyon’s return from the injured list, Ville Husso was reassigned to Grand Rapids.
NBA
The Pistons dropped a 125-121 decision to the Suns Saturday. Tobias Harris scored 21 points. Cade Cunningham added 20, and collected 11 assists.
The Pistons visit the Rockets for a Martin Luther King, Jr. day matinee Monday. Coverage will start at 1:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
NFL

The wheels fell off the Lions’ bandwagon Saturday, with a 45-31 loss to the Commanders in an NFC Divisional playoff game. The teams combined to produce 1,002 yards of offense. Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns, Jared Goff passed for one score, but also threw three interceptions. He left the game briefly in the first half after a hard hit, but returned after passing concussion evaluation. Washington’s Jayden Daniels tossed two touchdown passes.
The Commanders move on the the NFC championship game, and will face the winner of today’s contest between the Eagles and Rams. That game will kickoff at 3, with coverage on 99.3 The Lift.
The Chiefs dispatched the Texans 23-14 in their AFC divisional game Saturday. The Bills welcome the Ravens tonight at 6:30, with the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
