A little more than 75 inches of snow has landed in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Since Thanksgiving, the region has felt the warm embrace, or perhaps cold embrace, of winter’s return in the Copper Country. The start of the season comes in contrast to the 2023-24 season’s start says Visit Keweenaw Events coordinator Jesse Wierderhold.
It was a tough business season for a couple of people. I think a lot of people paid attention to Houghton and Keweenaw County’s emergency relief funds last year. You know, who got what or maybe what counties didn’t. There’s a lot of pressure on this year, right? But as we’re saying, hopefully, it keeps going strong. Last year’s lack of snow throughout the winter, followed by a rapid snowmelt in the spring caused damage to area roads and decreased opportunities for visitors traveling to the region during a vital annual economic period. National Weather Service forecasts to start 2025 show average temperature predictions combine with chances for above-average snowfall in the region.
