NHL
Red Wings LogoThe Detroit Red Wings traded down from the 16th pick to the 20th in the opening round of the NHL amateur draft Friday night. They used the pick to select defenseman Dennis Cholowski. Cholowski played for Chilliwack in the British Columbia junior league last season, and will skate for St. Cloud State this fall.

The step-down came after Detroit worked out a trade with the Coyotes. The teams swapped first-round picks. The Wings also got center Joe Vitale and a second round pick in this year’s draft. Arizona agreed to take the final year of Pavel Datsyuk’s contract, which will relieve Detroit of the 7.5-million-dollar salary cap obligation created when Datsyuk decided to play next season in his native Russia. The remaining six rounds of the draft will be held today.
