Wolverines Tie Gibson Series – Sunday Sports Wrap

2016-03-26 - Gibson CupJeff Erkkila’s goal just 44 seconds into overtime lifted the Calumet Wolverines to a 4-3 victory over the Portage Lake Pioneers Saturday night, and sent the Gibson Cup series to a deciding third game. The Pioneers opened the scoring as a floater from Mike Stevens found the back of the net from the point to make it 1-0 after the first. Portage increased the lead to 2-0 early in the second period, but Calumet came back to tie the game before the period ended. Eric Bausano gave the Wolverines their first lead of the series at the 6:39 mark of the third. Eric Greenley tied it again at 12:40. Erkkila’s shot was the only one on net for both teams in the extra session as both teams totaled 44 shots on goal. The Pioneers took the first game of the series 7-5 Friday evening. The deciding third game will be played Tuesday night at 7:30 at Dee Stadium. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The North Central boys basketball team won its second-straight state championship Saturday, with a 59-48 victory over Waterford Our Lady in the Class D title game. The Jets have won 55 straight games – tied for fourth as the longest winning streak in MHSAA boys history. Chassell holds the all-time record, with 65 straight victories between 1956 and 1959.

The Detroit Red Wings’ playoff drive hit a pothole yesterday, as they lost 7-2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Andreas Athanasiou gave Detroit a first-period lead, but Pittsburgh scored four unanswered goals in the second period, and forced Wings goalie Peter Mrazek from the game. Mike Green scored for Detroit early in the third period, but the Penguins continued their onslaught with three more goals off Jimmy Howard. The Wings host the Buffalo Sabres Monday night. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Philadelphia also lost Saturday night, so the Wings and Flyers remain tied for the final Eastern Conference wild card playoff position with seven regular-season games remaining. Philly holds the tiebreaker.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons’ playoff drive also hit a bump Saturday night, with a 112-95 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. The Pistons missed their first seven shots, and never recovered. Tobias Harris led Detroit with 21 points. Andre Drummond scored 19, and grabbed 17 rebounds. The Pistons entertain Oklahoma City Tuesday night.

NCAA
Two of the top seeds in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament are out. Second-seeded Villanova upended Kansas in the South regional final 64-59 Saturday. Second-seeded Oklahoma eliminated Oregon 80-68. The other two participants in the Final Four will be decided today. Virginia will face Syracuse in the Midwest final. North Carolina will take on Notre Dame in the East final. Our coverage will begin at 5:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Ferris State advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Tournament with a 5-4 overtime victory over St. Cloud State Saturday. The Bulldogs will face Denver this evening at 5:00. The University of Michigan lost its quarterfinal game to North Dakota 5-2 on Saturday.

In spring training baseball Saturday, the Detroit Tigers scored two runs in the top of the ninth, and edged the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 on Saturday. Justin Verlander gave up single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. He left the game after giving up a lead-off double to Ryan Howard in the sixth, and was charged with a third run when Howard eventually scored. Jason Upton homered twice. Detroit designated hitter Victor Martinez homered in a minor-league game on Saturday. It was the first action he’s seen since he strained his left hamstring on March 14th. Martinez is schedule to play in minor league games again today and tomorrow, and could rejoin the big club on Tuesday. Starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez threw 6-1/3rd innings of one-run ball in a minor league game on Saturday. He’s coming back from triceps inflammation and a bronchial illness. Both players could be ready for the regular season.

The Tigers assigned outfielder Steven Moya and shortstop Dixon Machado to Toledo on Saturday. Both moves were expected.

The Milwaukee Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks played to a 7-7 tie on Saturday. Matt Garza gave up four runs on nine hits over five innings. Jonathan Lucroy and Manny Pina homered. The Brewers face Cleveland this afternoon.
