High School

There’ll be no state basketball champions from the Upper Peninsula this year. The lone U.P. squad to reach the finals, Saint Ignace, fell 48-46 to Adrian Lenawee Christian in the Division Four championship yesterday morning. It’s the second straight title for Lenawee Christian, which defeated Chassell to win the Class D crown last year.

In Division One, Saginaw Heritage defeated Southfield A and T 55-40. Pewamo-Westphalia downed Flint Hamady 40-33 in the Division Three championship game. Detroit Edison PSA won the Division Two crown, with a 77-58 victory over Freeland.

WCHA

Minnesota State University scored two late goals to force overtime, then scored in the extra frame to defeat Bowling Green State University 3-2 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association championship game last night. Both of the Mavericks’ third period scores came in the final two minutes, after they had pulled their goalie. Nick Rivera’s goal 1:37 into overtime gave MSU the win.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines blasted the Eagle River Falcons 9-3 last night, to claim at least a share of the Great Lakes Hockey League regular season championship. Logan Rastello and Rory Anderson each scored twice and had one assist. Jeff Erkkila and Mike Babcock both had a goal and two assists. Josh Harju, Matt Yeo and Brendan Middleton also scored. Ian Carroll made 30 saves.

The score of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the Marquette Mutineers was not reported.

The GLHL playoffs will take place next weekend in Mosinee. We’ll broadcast all of the Pioneers and Wolverines games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

NHL

The Wings visit the San Jose Sharks Monday night. Pregame coverage begins at 10:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons went cold in the closing minutes, and lost 117-112 to the Portland Trail Blazers last night. Blake Griffin scored 27 for Detroit. The Pistons visit the Golden State Warriors tonight. Pregame coverage will begin at 8:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge the Tampa Bay Rays 8-7 yesterday. Prospect Cameron Rupp doubled home the winning runs. Detroit center fielder JaCoby Jones suffered a sprained shoulder while diving to catch a ball in yesterday’s game. He’ll likely open the season on the injured list. So will reliever Drew VerHagen, who was diagnosed with a right forearm strain after pitching Friday night.

Half of the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Texas Rangers 7-3 yesterday. Ben Gamel homered. The other half of the Brewers lost 6-4 to the Kansas City Royals. Travis Shaw and Christian Yelich homered. The Brewers will face the Arizona Diamondbacks in Cactus League play this afternoon.
