Wolverines Retain Gibson Cup – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

Ewen-Trout Creek fell just a bit short in its bid for a Division Four state title Saturday, falling 56-45 in overtime to Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian in the title match. The Panthers led by seven at halftime, but the Defenders’ depth eventually prevailed. Tri-Unity rotated eight players through the game. Ewen used only five. Defenders standout Brady Titus led all scorers with 33 points. Jaden Borseth scored 16 for the Panthers, with Brendan Polkky adding 14, and Eric Abramson 12. Ewen finishes the season with a record of 22-4.

Menominee also came up short in its quest for a Division Three state crown, losing to Schoolcraft 59-49. The Maroons conclude their season with a record of 23-4.

In other title games Saturday…
• Warren de la Salle defeated Grand Blanc 67-58 in Division One.
• Williamston completed an unbeaten season in Division Two by edging Grand Rapids Catholic Central 68-65 in overtime.

College Softball

The Finlandia University softball team lost two to Crown College Saturday, 10-9 and 8-0.

College Baseball

The Finlandia baseball team’s doubleheaders at Wisconsin-LaCrosse scheduled for yesterday and today were pushed back to today and tomorrow because of poor weather.

Gibson Cup

The Calumet Wolverines held on to the Gibson Cup with a 3-1 victory over the Portage Lake Pioneers Saturday night. Brett Hauswirth gave the Pios an early lead, scoring just a minute into the contest. That’s where the score stayed until 13 minutes into the third period, when Eric Bausano tied it for the Wolves. Dylan Boberg netted the game-winner 40 seconds later, and Brent Loukas added a late empty-netter.

Calumet claims the historic trophy for the fourth consecutive year, after a run of nine straight seasons by the Pioneers.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 2-1 in overtime to the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday afternoon. Newcomer Oskar Sundqvist scored Detroit’s only goal. Alex Nedelkjovic made 34 saves.

The Wings visit the Pittsburgh Penguins today. Coverage will begin at 4:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons welcome the New York Knicks this afternoon.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers plated eight runs in the seventh inning, and routed the Philadelphia Phillies 14-8 in Grapefruit League play Saturday. Detroit starter Matt Manning gave up four runs over three innings. Derek Hill and Eric Haase homered.

The Tigers will face the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon. Tyler Alexander is scheduled to start.

The Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners played to a 7-7 Cactus League tie Saturday. Starter Adrian Houser struggled, allowing four runs on seven hits over three innings. Andrew McCutchen hit two home runs. Kolton Wong, Tyrone Taylor and Keston Hiura each hit one.

The Brewers have today off, and will play the San Francisco Giants tomorrow afternoon. Corbin Burnes will start.
