Wolverines Fall in GLHL Tourney Final – Monday Sports Wrap

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines lost to the West Bend Bombers 2-0 in the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament championship yesterday afternoon. Ryan Patrick made 35 saves in net. The Wolverines advanced to the final by splitting their pool games, and then defeating the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 5-1 Saturday night. The Portage Lake Pioneers were eliminated Friday, after they lost both of their pool games.

The Wolverines and the Portage Lake Pioneers will wrap their seasons against each other this weekend, at the Gibson Cup tournament. Game one will be Friday at 7:30 at Dee Stadium, with game two Saturday at the Colosseum. If needed, game three will be played a week from tomorrow at the Dee. We’ll broadcast the entire series on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings have lost 12 of their last 13 games, and skate at Montreal tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons have won three of their last four contests, and will host the Los Angeles Lakers tonight.

MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers bounced the Atlanta Braves 10-3 yesterday. Michael Fulmer pitched seven shutout innings, and gave up just two hits. Miguel Cabrera and Jose Iglesias homered. The Tigers face the Tampa Bay Rays this afternoon.

The Tigers open the regular season at home Thursday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Follow the Tigers on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has assigned reliever Blaine Hardy to Toledo. Hardy cleared waivers after being removed from the 40-man roster late last week, to make room for utility player Niko Goodrum.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost 16-1 to  the Chicago White Sox yesterday. Milwaukee used 10 pitchers, mostly prospects. The Brewers will face the Houston Astros tonight.

Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell announced yesterday that Brent Suter and Brandon Woodruff will fill out the starting rotation. Junior Guerra will begin the season at Colorado Springs. Former Brewers ace Yovani Gallardo was informed he will not make the team. Reliever Boone Logan will start the season on the disabled list – he’ll miss a month or more with a strained triceps. Outfielder Keon Broxton will also start the season in Colorado Springs.
