Wolverines Complete Year-End Sweep of Pioneers – Saturday Sports Wrap

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines completed a sweep in their New Year’s weekend series with the Portage Lake Pioneers by claiming a 5-1 victory at Dee Stadium last night. Rory Anderson got the Wolves off to a quick start when he found the net 21 seconds into the game. He added his second of the night early in the second period. Cam Kauppinen, Logan Rastello and Matt Yeo closed out the scoring. Ian Carroll earned the win in net.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings returned from their COVID-19 break, and fell to the Washington Capitals 3-1 last night. Pius Suter put Detroit on top early in the second period, but the Caps tied it late in the frame, and Alex Ovechkin scored twice in the final three minutes of the game to seal the win.

The Wings host the Boston Bruins tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the San Antonio Spurs tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

College Football

The University of Michigan’s hopes for a national college football title ended last night, as they lost 34-11 to Georgia in their semifinal game at the Orange Bowl. Alabama wiped out Cincinnati 27-6 in the Cotton Bowl, so the Bulldogs and the Crimson Tide will meet for the national crown January 10th.

NFL

Tomorrow…
• The Detroit Lions visit the Seattle Seahawks for a 4:25 game.
• The Green Bay Packers host the Minnesota Vikings in the Sunday night contest.

Hear both broadcasts on 99.3 The Lift.

It’s looking increasingly unlikely that Detroit quarterback Jared Goff will play tomorrow. He’s dealing with a strained knee. Tim Boyle is expected to start. Running back D’Andre Swift should be back in the lineup, after missing time with a shoulder injury. Fullback Jason Cabinda will miss the game with a bad knee. As of this morning, the Lions have five regulars on their COVID-19 list, along with two practice squad players and defensive backs coach Aubrey Pleasant.

The Packers will be without cornerback Jaire Alexander, and tackles David Bakhtiari and Billy Turner. The Vikings will play without starting quarterback Kirk Cousins, who has been placed on the COVID-19 list. Sean Mannion will start, with rookie Kellen Mond backing him up.
