Wolverines Advance to GLHL Final – Sunday Sports Wrap

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines will face the West Bend Bombers for the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament championship this afternoon. After winning their opening pool game Friday night, the Wolverines fell to the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 7-5 yesterday afternoon. Despite not winning their pool, the Wolverines claimed the at-large berth in the semifinals, where they defeated the Ice Dogs 5-1 in a rematch last night. The Bombers defeated the Marquette Mutineers 5-4 in the other semifinal. GLIAC
The Ferris State University men’s basketball team won the NCAA Division II championship yesterday, with a 71-69 victory over Northern State University from South Dakota. It’s the first national title for the Bulldogs.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost 4-3 to the Toronto Maple Leafs last night. Dylan Larkin, Tyler Bertuzzi and Frans Nielsen scored for Detroit, which held a 3-2 lead early in the third period before giving up two unanswered Toronto goals. Jimmy Howard stopped 25 shots. The Wings have lost 12 of their last 13 games, and skate at Montreal tomorrow night. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
Anthony Tolliver scored a season-best 25 points, as the Detroit Pistons routed the Chicago Bulls 117-95 last night. Andre Drummond grabbed 20 rebounds. The Pistons have won three of their last four contests, and will host the Los Angeles Lakers tomorrow night.

MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers lost 4-1 to the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday. Jordan Zimmermann gave up four runs on nine hits over five innings. The Tigers face the Atlanta Braves this afternoon.

The Tigers released infielder Alexi Amarista yesterday, an indication that Niko Goodrum will likely make the opening-day roster as a utility player. Amarista could be signed by another team, or could agree to a minor league contract with Detroit.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Oakland Athletics 10-5 yesterday. Christian Yelich and hopefuls Christian Bethancourt and Troy Stokes Jr. each homered. Starter Jhoulys Chacín threw three scoreless innings, then gave up two runs in the fourth inning. The Brewers will face the Chicago White Sox today.

The Calumet Wolverines and Portage Lake Pioneers begin their battle for the Gibson Cup Friday night at 7:30 at Dee Stadium. Game two will be played Saturday at the Colosseum, with game three the following Tuesday, if needed. Hear all the broadcasts on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
