Wolverine, Stanton Claim Twilight Wins – Friday Sports Wrap

Norris

MLB
The Detroit Tigers’ struggles continued last night, with a 9-6 loss to the Seattle Mariners. Seattle scored three runs in the second, and two in the third, off Daniel Norris. He continued through the sixth, and took the loss. Francsico Rodriguez gave up a grand slam in the seventh. Ian Kinsler and Miguel Cabrera homered for Detroit.

Anderson

The Tigers have lost six straight, and 12 of their last 16 games. They’ll open an interleague series at San Diego tonight. Michael Fulmer will start against Luis Perdomo. Pregame coverage will begin at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers got past the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 last night. Chase Anderson gave up two runs over six innings, and got the win. Travis Shaw homered and added a pair of doubles.

The Brewers open a weekend set at Atlanta tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Mike Foltynewicz.

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball last night…
– Wolverine-Orbit shut down REL-Mohawk Technologies 3-1.
– Superior National Bank-Stanton scored four runs in the sixth inning, and came from behind to edge Dean Kangas-State Farm 5-4. Cole Jepson got the win, and Eric Nettell had two hits.

– At the Chassell field, Superior National Bank plays Northern Michigan Land Brokers at 5:45. Frank A. Douglass Agency meets Mattila Rock and Dock at 7:15.

Kennard

NBA
The Detroit Pistons chose Duke guard Luke Kennard with the 12th pick in the NBA amateur draft last night. Kennard was regarded by many as the most polished offensive player available, but Pistons’ coach Stan Van Gundy admitted that Kennard will need to work on his defense if he wants to earn playing time. The Pistons did not have a second-round selection.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s soccer team has added two recruits. Daniel Cantu earned four letters at Homestead High School in Florida City, Florida. Bryan Lopez lettered at Cherokee High School in Canton, Georgia.

High School
The Houghton, Hancock and Calumet high school hockey teams will return to the MIHL Showcase next year. The list of 40 schools selected for the event was released yesterday. The annual showcase in Trenton will be held February 1st through 3rd.

The U.P. Football All-Star Game will be played tomorrow at the Superior Dome. Rather than divide schools by region this year, players from across the peninsula will be assigned to Team Red or Team Black. The Team Black roster includes Jesse Helminen, Grant Johnson, Hayden Kesti and Jack Sturos from Calumet, Matthew Beck from Baraga, Brendan Middleton from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Noah Rule from Ontonagon, and Caleb Scroggs from L’Anse. Team Red will feature Stephen Dudenas, Steven Suhonen, Jason Sutherland and Lincoln Klein from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Rory Anderson and Russ Bjorn from Calumet, Jordan Reynolds and Nick Weingarten from Houghton, and Mike McParlan from Hancock. Lake Linden-Hubbell coaches Ken Klein and Leon Sutherland will be assistants for the Red Team.

Horseshoe Tournament
The PastyFest Horseshoe Tournament will be held tomorrow at Agassiz Park in Calumet. Sign-up begins at 11:00 and play starts at noon. The cost is $20.00 per two-person team.
