Wolverine, Stanton Advance to Twilight Final – Saturday Sports Wrap

Justin Verlander turned in six effective innings, as the Detroit Tigers edged the New York Mets 4-3 Friday night. Verlander struck out nine. He gave up two runs on a Kelly Johnson homer in the top of the fourth inning, and improved to 12-6 on the season. The Tigers responded with three in the bottom of the fourth, on a home run by Victor Martinez, and an RBI single by James McCann. Shane Greene and Justin Wilson each pitched scoreless innings in relief. Francisco Rodriguez gave up a run in the ninth, but earned his 31st save.

The Tigers host the Mets again tonight. Matt Boyd will pitch against Logan Verrett. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Cleveland lost yesterday, so Detroit trails the Indians by two games in the American League Central.

An MRI has shown that there’s no serious problem with the back muscle that tightened up during Jordan Zimmermann’s start on Thursday. Zimmermann will throw a bullpen session tomorrow to see if the muscle has improved. If not, he could be headed back to the disabled list.

Blaine Boyer walked Wellington Castillo in the bottom of the 11th inning to force home the winning run, as the Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 Friday night. Chase Anderson turned in a quality start, giving up two runs over six innings. Keon Broxton homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers continue that set against the Diamondbacks in Arizona tonight. Matt Garza will pitch against Patrick Corbin.

Twilight LeagueWolverine-Orbit will face Superior National Bank-Stanton in the Twilight Baseball League championship series next week.
– Wolverine advanced by outslugging Pat’s Foods-Mosquito Inn 14-12 Friday night in the third game of their semifinal series.
– Stanton earned a berth by scoring 10 runs in the top of the seventh inning, and beating Dean Kangas State Farm 16-6 in the third game of their semifinal set.

The best-of-three championship series will open Tuesday night at the Wolverine field. Game two will be played Thursday at the Stanton field. Both contests will begin at 6:15. If necessary, game three will be played Saturday at the Wolverine field. We will broadcast all of the games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Negaunee basketball standout Trent Bell has made an early commitment to play college ball at Michigan Tech. Bell is 6’7″, and will be playing his senior season for the Miners this year. He joins another U.P. all-star, Dawson Bilski from North Central, who committed to the Huskies several weeks ago.

Copperman Triathlon LogoThe Aspirus Keweenaw Copperman Triathlon will be held today. The Triathlon includes a half-mile swim in Lake Fanny Hooe, a 23-mile bike along the shores of Lake Superior and a five-mile run. The accompanying Copperman Duathlon starts with a six-K run instead of the swim. The race will then continue with the 23-mile bike and the five-mile run.

Events are centered at the boat ramp at Fort Wilkins State Park. Spectators are welcome.
