Wolverine-Orbit Wins Twilight Opener – Wednesday Sports Wrap

MLB
The Detroit Tigers got just three hits last night, in a 6-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Spot starter Artie Lewicki didn’t make it through the fourth inning. He was charged with four runs, and took the loss.

The Tigers continue that series in Boston tonight. Blaine Hardy will pitch against Eduardo Rodriguez. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit third baseman Jeimer Candelario left last night’s game after jamming a finger while making a defensive play in the fourth inning. X-rays were negative, and he’s considered day-to-day.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Cleveland Indians 3-2 last night. Junior Guerra went six innings, gave up all three Cleveland runs, and took the loss. Travis Shaw homered. It’s the first time since late April that Milwaukee has lost back-to-back games.

The Brewers wrap up that quick interleague set at Cleveland this afternoon. Chase Anderson will start against Carlos Carrasco.

In Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League play tonight…
– Northern Michigan Land Brokers will face Mattila Rock and Dock at 7:15. That game has been moved from the Chassell field to the Houghton field.
– At the Bone Yard, Superior National Bank will meet Loading Zone II/Calumet Golf Club at 5:45, and Auto Pro Glass and Tire will play Superior National Bank at 7:15.

NBA
The NBA Championship Series resumes tonight, as Golden State tips off at Cleveland. The Warriors lead the series 2-0.

NHL
The Stanley Cup final picks up again tomorrow night, when Washington skates at Las Vegas. The Capitals lead that set 3-1.

Grand Rapids Griffins assistant coach Ben Simon has been named the team’s head coach. He replaces Todd Nelson, who left the Red Wings’ top farm team for an assistant coaching job in Dallas.

Amateur Hockey
A couple of local players were selected in yesterday’s North American Hockey League draft. Dawson McKay was selected in the fourth round by the Bismarck Bobcats. Daunte Fortner from Kingsford was taken in the 15th round by the Corpus Christi IceRays. Both players were members of the national champion Team Copper Country squad.

The 16th annual Joe Evans Classic golf scramble will be held Saturday at the Portage Lake Course. The cost is $225.00 per three-person team. Proceeds benefit Omega House, which provides end of life care to Keweenaw residents. To sign up, call Omega House at 462-4438, or click here.

Calumet will take on Traverse City St. Francis in the high school baseball tournament regional semifinals Saturday at 10:00 in Charlevoix. Our broadcast coverage will begin around 9:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. We’ll also broadcast the regional final at 2:00, if the Copper Kings advance.
