Tigers Blanked by Yanks
The Tigers’ offensive swoon continued yesterday in a 1-0 loss to the Yankees. Detroit collected only five hits, and leaves the Big Apple having scored just six runs in their four-game series. Rick Porcello took the loss, giving up the only run of the game in a seven-inning effort.
The Tigers open a series at Toronto tonight. Anibal Sanchez will start against R.A. Dickey. Hear the first pitch at 7:07 on AM 1400, WCCY.
The Royals won their fourth straight game yesterday, so Detroit’s lead over Kansas City in the American League Central Division is now just two-and-a-half games.
Tigers’ outfielder Andy Dirks is being moved up to Toledo to continue his rehab assignment. Dirks is recovering from back surgery. He was pulled from Tuesday’s game with West Michigan because of a hamstring pull, but the injury is not believed to be serious.
Brewers Beat Giants
Wily Peralta became the first pitcher in the majors to earn his 14th win of the season, as the Brewers got past the Giants 3-1 yesterday. Peralta struck out nine and allowed just one run, while pitching into the seventh. Milwaukee scored twice in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie. Khris Davis drove in Aramis Ramirez with a ground-rule double, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Mark Reynolds.
The Brewers host the Dodgers tonight. Kyle Lohse will start against Roberto Hernandez.
Saint Louis and Pittsburgh also won, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division remains at a game over the Cardinals, and a game-and-a-half over the Pirates.
Mike Fiers will come up from Nashville to start Saturday’s game for the Brewers. He’ll fill in for Matt Garza, who’s on the disabled list with a strained oblique.
