NHL

The Red Wings closed their season with another come-from-behind win last night, overcoming a two-goal deficit to trim the Canadiens 5-4 in a shootout. Moritz Seider, Joe Veleno and Daniel Sprong scored for Detroit. David Perron’s goal with five seconds remaining in regulation forced overtime. Patrick Kane netted the only goal in the shootout.

The heroics weren’t enough to vault the Wings into the playoffs. Just before the shootout began, players learned that the Capitals had shaded the Flyers 2-1. That left Detroit and Washington tied in the standings. The Capitals held the tie-breaker advantage, and clinched the final wild card berth in the Eastern Conference. The Wings end their season with a record of 41-32-9.

MLB

The Tigers scored two in the bottom of the eighth, and got past the Rangers 4-2 yesterday. Gio Ushela singled home the game-winner, and Matt Vierling raced home on a wild pitch to add an insurance run. Kerry Carpenter had a double and a triple and drove in a run. Casey Mize gave up two runs on five hits over six innings.

The Tigers host the Rangers again this afternoon. Tarik Skubal will start against Dane Dunning. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers fell to the Padres 6-3 last night. San Diego clubbed Wade Miley for four runs in the first inning. Miley left after the third, after having been hit on the kneecap by a batted ball. He’ll be evaluated today. Sal Frelick had three hits for the Crew.

The Brewers conclude that home set against the Padres this afternoon.

As expected, Milwaukee has placed outfielder Christian Yelich on the injured list, with back soreness. Owen Miller has been called up from Nashville to fill in.
