The Detroit Red Wings may have found their goalie of the future. Yesterday, Detroit obtained Alex Nedeljkovic from the Hurricanes. Carolina gets the negotiating rights to goaltender Jonathan Bernier, who is an unrestricted free agent. They also receive one of Detroit’s third-round picks in this year’s draft. Nedeljkovic was a finalist for the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie last season. He was a restricted free agent, but now has signed a two-year contract with Detroit. The Wings also signed center Michael Rasmussen to a three-year contract extension yesterday.
The NHL entry draft begins with round one tonight. Detroit has the sixth overall pick. Rounds two through seven will be held tomorrow.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers grabbed an early lead, then held off the Texas Rangers 7-5 yesterday. Home runs by Eric Haase, Zack Short and Victor Reyes powered the early surge. Texas narrowed the gap with three runs off Erasmo Ramirez and Buck Farmer in the sixth. Kyle Funkhauser took over in the seventh, allowed a run in the eighth, and earned the win. Gregory Soto collected his 11th save.
The Tigers have won seven straight, and visit the Kansas City Royals tonight. Wily Peralta will start against Kris Bubic. Coverage will begin at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Tigers’ beleaguered pitching may be getting some help. Michael Fulmer is beginning a rehab assignment at Toledo, after missing nearly a month because of a neck problem. On the downside, infielder Isaac Parades has landed on the injured list with a sore hip. Willi Castro has been brought up from the Mud Hens to fill in.
The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and open a home set against the Chicago White Sox tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Lucas Giolito.
