Fulmer

MLB
The Detroit Tigers outhit the San Diego Padres 3-2 last night, but lost the game 1-0. Austin Hedges knocked in the game’s only run with an RBI double off Michael Fulmer in the second inning. Fulmer pitched through the seventh, and took the loss. Detroit had early opportunities against Padres’ starter Luis Perdomo, who walked five over the first four inning, but couldn’t capitalize.

Rodriguez

The Tigers have lost seven straight, and 13 of their last 17 games. They’ll continue that interleague series at San Diego tonight. Anibal Sanchez will start against Dinelson Lamet. Pregame coverage will begin at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Before the game, the Tigers released struggling reliever Francisco Rodríguez. Rodríguez saved 44 games for Detroit last season, and is fourth on the MLB all-time saves list. This season, though, his ERA ballooned to 7.82. He lost his closing job to Justin Wilson. On Thursday, he gave up a grand slam in Detroit’s 9-6 loss to the Mariners.

V. Martinez

Tigers’ designated hitter Victor Martinez is slated to return to action Tuesday. He’s been on the disabled list while being treated for an irregular heartbeat.

With his team mired in last place, Detroit general manager Al Avila said yesterday that he’s ready to listen to trade offers from other teams.

Nelson

The Milwaukee Brewers’ late comeback fell short, and the fell to the Atlanta Braves 5-4 last night.  Jimmy Nelson gave up four runs over five innings. The Brewer trailed by three heading into the top of the eighth. They scored twice on a double by Orlando Arcia, but pinch-hitter Jesús Aguilar grounded into a double play to end the threat.

The Brewers continue that set at Atlanta this afternoon. Matt Garza will pitch against R.A. Dickey.

Aguilar replaced Eric Sogard in last night’s game after Sogard was hit in the elbow by a pitch. Sogard will be evaluated today.
