NHL
The Detroit Red Wings wasted no time as the NHL free agent signing window opened Friday. They started by re-signing Darren Helm to a five-year, 19.25-million dollar deal. They inked former Islanders center Frans Nielsen to a six-year, 31.5-million dollar contract. Nielsen is 32 years old. The 52 points he compiled for New York last season (20 goals, 32 assists) would have led the Wings. Detroit added veteran forward Thomas Vanek with a one-year deal worth 2.6-million dollars, and signed journeyman center Steve Ott to an 800,000-dollar, one-year contract. Vanek had 18 goals and 23 assists for the Wild last season. He was once one of the league’s elite scorers, but Minnesota bought out the final year of his contract. Ott appeared in 21 games for the Blues, with no goals and two assists.
Detroit also signed young defenseman Alexey Marchenko to a two-year, 2.9-million dollar contract extension. They brought in minor-league free agent forward Matt Lorito on a two-way contract that could be worth as much as 1.25-million dollars if he plays the next two seasons in the NHL, or as little as 525,000 dollars if he spends the entire time with the Grand Rapids Griffins. Lorito played for the Albany Devils last season. The Wings added some roster depth with minor-league forward Ben Street and goaltender Edward Pasquale. Both were signed to one-year deals, and will likely spend most of their time with the Griffins.
NBA
On the opening day of the NBA free agent signing period, the Detroit Pistons filled their backup point guard slot by signing well-traveled Ish Smith. Detroit will be his 10th team in six seasons in the league. It’s a three-year deal worth 18-million dollars.
The big news from Detroit, though, is that the Pistons have reportedly agreed to make center Andre Drummond the highest-paid player in team history. The deal is said to be worth 125-million dollars over five seasons. Drummond could opt out of the fifth season. Per league rules, the contract can’t be signed until Thursday. It may not happen until even later, depending on when the NBA announces its salary cap for next season. Drummond is a restricted free agent. League rules allow teams to exceed the salary cap to keep their own restricted free agents.
