College Basketball
Brandi Hainault will take over as head coach of the Finlandia University women’s basketball team. Hainault is a former Lions player. She coached the Chassell girls team for six seasons, including the 2017-2018 team that went to the state championship game. She has served as the assistant coach for the Finlandia women’s squad for the past three seasons.
Hainault takes over for Mariah LaPointe-Dunham, who was recently appointed athletic director at Baraga High School.
NHL
The Red Wings added a half-dozen new players yesterday, as the free agent signing window opened. The new Wings are:
• Forward Andrew Copp, who netted 21 goals for the Rangers and Jets last season – five years, $28.1 million;
• Defenseman Ben Chiarot, who split time between the Canadiens and Panthers last season – four years, $19 million;
• Forward Dominik Kubalik, who scored 15 goals for the Blackhawks last season – two years, $5 million;
• Forward David Perron, who scored 27 goals for the Blues in the regular season, and added nine in the playoffs – two years, $9.5 million;
• Forward Matt Luff, who bounced between the Predators and Milwaukee Admirals last season – one year;
• Austin Czarnik, who played for the Islanders, the Kraken and the AHL Bridgeport Islanders last season – two years.
Several of Detroit’s free agents found new homes. Goaltender Thomas Greiss signed with the Blues. Goaltender Calvin Pickard joined the Oilers. Goaltender Magnus Hellberg, who played one game with Detroit late last season, signed with the Kraken. Defenseman Dan Renouf, who spent most of last season in Grand Rapids, headed to the Bruins. Veteran defenseman Marc Staal inked with the Panthers. Forward Mitchell Stephens joined the Canadiens.
Some former Michigan Tech players also signed free agent contracts yesterday:
• Goaltender Phoenix Copley joined the Kings;
• Forward Jake Lucchini signed with the Senators;
• Center Joel L’Esperance inked a two-year deal with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
MLB
The Tigers fell 5-2 to the Royals yesterday. Tarik Skubal gave up five runs over six innings, and took the loss.
The Tigers visit the Guardians tonight, to make up a rainout from May 21st. Elvin Rodriguez has been called up from Toledo to start against Triston McKenzie. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
To make room for Rodriguez on the roster, reliever Drew Carlton has been sent down.
Jose Miranda’s three-run homer off Josh Hader in the bottom of the ninth gave the Twins a 4-1 victory over the Brewers yesterday afternoon. Jace Peterson’s solo home run in the third inning provided Milwaukee’s only score.
The Brewers visit the Giants tonight. Corbin Burnes will start against Carlos Rodón.
Milwaukee has added some relief help. Connor Sadzeck has been brought up from Nashville. Infielder Keston Hiura has been sent down.
