The Detroit Red Wings dropped game two of their opening-round playoff series 5-3 at Tampa Friday night. Jimmy Howard took the loss in goal, stopping 26 of 30 shots. The game was not a friendly one. 27 penalties were assessed, including three in a set-to midway through the second period, and 14 in a melee with 54 seconds remaining in the game. The Lightning lead the best-of-seven set two games to none. Game three will be played Sunday night in Detroit. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
MLB
Colby Rasmus’ rbi single in the first inning was all the Houston Astros needed to defeat the Detroit Tigers 1-0 Friday. Detroit starter Mike Pelfrey scattered five hits over six inning, and took the hard-luck loss. Buck Farmer pitched two innings of perfect relief. Dallas Keuchel held the Tigers to five hits over eight innings. The Tigers continue that set at Houston tonight. Justin Verlander will pitch against Collin McHugh. The Milwaukee Brewers outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-4 on Friday. Milwaukee starter Jimmy Nelson turned in six shutout innings, but was charged with three of the four runs the Bucs scored in the seventh. Ryan Braun hit two home runs for the Brewers, who continue that series at Pittsburgh tonight. Taylor Jungmann will pitch against Jonathon Niese.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons open the playoffs tomorrow afternoon at Cleveland at 3:00. We’ll join that game after Tigers baseball on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team won all three of its games at Maranatha Baptist University Friday afternoon, 9-1, 18-13 and 14-3. The Lions play two games at Wisconsin-River Falls today.
MTU
The MTU men’s tennis team entertains Lake Superior State this morning.
LSSU
Lake Superior State University will eliminate its women’s softball program at the end of this season. The decision came after a review of campus programs brought about by declining enrollment and state support. Athletic Director Kristin Dunbar said athletes in the softball program will be given the chance to transfer to other schools. The move will leave LSSU with 14 varsity sports. The University will reduce the number of scholarships offered to male athletes, and increase the number offered to female athletes to maintain Title IX compliance.
