NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 in the first game of their opening-round NHL playoff series last night. Nikita Kucherov gave Tampa an early lead with a goal in the first period. Detroit surged ahead in the second period, with goals by Mike Green and Justin Abdelkader, but Kucherov’s second goal of the game tied the score. Alex Killorn’s tip-in midway through the third period was the game-winner. Jimmy Howard stopped 31 shots, in a game in which 18 penalties were assessed. Game two will be played at Tampa tomorrow night. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Penguins and Blues also won their opening games last night.
MLB
Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s grand slam powered the Detroit Tigers to a 7-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates last night. Detroit starter Shane Greene was shaky early, giving up two runs in a 35-pitch first inning. He held the Pirates scoreless over the next five innings, though, and earned his first win of the season when Saltalamacchia blasted his 100th career home run.
The Tigers play in Pittsburgh again this afternoon. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Gerrit Cole. Hear the first pitch at 12:35 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Domingo Santana’s two-run homer in the ninth inning lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals last night. Santana’s blast came just after St. Louis’ Brandon Moss had tied the game with a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth.
The Brewers will wrap up that set at St. Louis this afternoon. Wily Peralta will pitch against Jaime Garcia.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons edged the Cleveland Cavaliers 112-110 in overtime in their final game of the regular season last night. The game meant nothing in the standings, so neither team played their starters. Jodie Meeks led Detroit with 20 points. Meeks had only played 17 minutes all season, while battling a foot injury. The Pistons open the playoffs at Cleveland Sunday afternoon at 3:00. Game two will be played Wednesday night in Cleveland. Games three and four will be played in Detroit April 22nd and 24th.
