In hockey, L’Anse visits the Calumet Junior Varsity team.
Hancock’s Ted Randell has been named the LTU Michigan North Division High School Hockey Player of the Month for December. Randell had three goals and 13 assists, as the Bulldogs went unbeaten in December. Brent Loukus from Calumet and Jacob Kruse from Houghton received Honorable Mention votes. The statewide voting is coordinated by the hockey coaching staff at Lawrence Tech. KBear 102 is a member of the voting panel.
MTU
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams play at Ashland tonight.
Former Michigan Tech goaltender Jamie Phillips has been named the starter for the 2017 East Coast Hockey League All-Star Classic on January 18th. Phillips plays for the Tulsa Oilers, and is under contract with the Winnipeg Jets. He leads the ECHL with 18 wins.
NMU
Both Northern Michigan basketball teams play at Tiffin this evening.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings’ scoring woes continued last night, with a 2-0 loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Petr Mrazek made 22 saves. The Wings skate at Los Angeles against the Kings tonight. Faceoff will be at 10:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons will host the Charlotte Hornets tonight.
NFL
Jim Caldwell will return to coach the Detroit Lions next season. General Manager Bob Quinn made the announcement yesterday, citing the development of some of the team’s young players, and the team’s presence in the playoffs. Caldwell is entering the final year of his contract. Quinn did not address a potential extension of that deal. The Lions led the NFC North Division for much of the season, before losing their last three games. They earned a wild card playoff berth, and will play at Seattle Saturday night.
