MLB: Tigers Blank Rangers
Rick Porcello threw his first major-league shutout, and the Tigers blew past the Rangers 6-0 last night. Porcello gave up just three hits, and struck out six, as he earned his 10th win of the season. Miguel Cabrera led the Detroit offense with four hits.
The Tigers have won seven straight… and have not trailed in a game since last Saturday in Cleveland. They open a weekend set at Houston tonight. Justin Verlander will face Brad Peacock. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on AM 1400, WCCY.
Kansas City was idle yesterday, so the Tigers’ lead in the AMerican League Central increases to four-and-a-half games.
Brewers Rip Rockies
The Brewers defeated the Rockies 7-4. Wily Peralta survived a four-run fourth inning to earn the win. Rickie Weeks and Scooter Gennett homered. With a record of 49-32, Milwaukee has its best record at the halfway point of the season in team history.
The Brewers host the Rockies again tonight. Kyle Lohse will start against Tyler Matzek.
Twilight League Baseball
In Twilight League baseball action last night…
– At the Hancock Driving Park, Wolverine-Orbit defeated Pat’s Foods 6-3. Mike Saari went the distance on the mound to pick up the win and also homered in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie.
– At the Stanton Field, Kyle Storm hit two home runs, as BlueSky Health shut down the Stanton Wildcats 13-1. Owen Kariniemi got the win for BlueSky.
Pistons Take Dinwiddie
The Detroit Pistons used the 38th pick in last night’s NBA draft to take Colorado point guard Spencer Dinwiddie. At 6’6”, Dinwiddie is tall for a point guard. He’s coming off ACL surgery that forced him to miss the last 18 games of his college career.
Marquette Royale to Join Lions
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team has added another player for the upcoming season. Lane King is a forward from Waunakee, Wisconsin. He played with the Marquette Royales of the Minnesota Junior Hockey League last season. In 47 games, King scored 28 goals and added 105 assists.
Wild Opens Play for National Title
The Western Wild girls’ basketball team faces Team Premier in their first game at the USSSA National Championship at 9:00 this morning. Team Premier already has one victory… a 55-19 pasting of the Southern Lady Spurs yesterday afternoon. The Wild will face ADS Express this afternoon at 2:15… and the Southern Lady Spurs tonight at 6:00. They’ll wrap up pool play tomorrow morning at 9:00 against the Jupiter Jaguars. The top two teams from their five-team pool advance to the semi-finals tomorrow afternoon. The Wild is made up of ninth grade girls from Baraga and Hancock. Follow the tournament here.
U.P. All Star Football Game Tomorrow
Many of the best recently-graduated high school senior football players from the Upper Peninsula will face off tomorrow in the U.P. Football All Star Game. The West roster includes Jacob Pieti and Paul Torola from Calumet… Sean Patchin from Hancock… Chuck Heckel and Konrad Klein from Lake Linden-Hubbell… Keith Denomie, Ryan LaBerge, Jonny Magaraggia, Brandon Scroggs and Jimmy Veker from L’Anse… Dillon Hueckstaedt from Baraga… and Tony Soumis from Ontonagon. Retired Forest Park football coach Bill Santilli will be the West head coach, and Lake Linden-Hubbell assistant coach Ken Klein will be one of his assistants. The game begins at 3:00 at the Superior Dome.
