Wild Fall in Semis – Sunday Sports Wrap

Ian Kinsler’s three-run homer with two outs in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Tigers to a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Astros yesterday. Kinsler’s shot caromed off a the left-centerfield wall, just above the home run line. Max Scherzer gave up two runs in the first inning… then pitched shutout ball through the seventh. Phil Coke turned in a perfect eighth to earn the win. Joe Nathan got the save, despite allowing a solo home run to Alex Presley.

The Tigers wrap up that set at Houston this afternoon. Drew Smyly will face Scott Feldman. Hear the first pitch at 1:10 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Kansas City lost yesterday, so the Tigers’ lead in the American League Central is back to four-and-a-half games.

Brewers Defeat Rockies Milwaukee Brewers Circle Logo
Carlos Gomez hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and the Brewers cruised to a 7-4 victory over the Rockies yesterday. Ryan Braun contributed a two-run triple. Matt Garza pitched into the seventh to earn the win.

The Brewers conclude that series this afternoon. Yovani Gallardo will start against Jorge De La Rosa.

The Cardinals lost, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central increases to six-and-a-half games. Gomez collided with Ryan Braun in the outfield during yesterday’s game. He passed a concussion test, but suffered a strained neck, and is considered day-to-day.

After taking 17-year-old Michigan native Dylan Larkin in the first round of the NHL draft Friday night, the Red Wings traded up to take center Dominic Turgeon in the second round. Dominic is the son of former NHL star Pierre Turgeon. Learn about all of Detroit’s second-day draft picks here.

Wild’s Title Attempt Ends in Semis Western Wild
The Western Wild girls’ basketball team lost to FGB Lightning 52-39 in the semi-finals of the USSSA National Tournament on Saturday. The opened the tournament Friday morning with a 61-38 loss to eventual tournament winner Team Premier. The Wild bounced back, and took a 45-41 victory over ADS Express, and a 50-44 win over the Southern Lady Spurs on Friday. They wrapped up pool play Saturday morning with a 45-30 loss to the Jupiter Jaguars. The Wild is made up of ninth grade girls from Baraga and Hancock. See all the tournament results here.

UP All-Star Game 2014East Pulls Away Late to Win U.P. All Star Football Game
The U.P. All-Star Game was a dogfight through three quarters. The East team then scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to take a 41-24 victory. It was the sixth-straight win for the East in the All-Star series. The East will not win next year – the game will shift to a North versus South format. Former MTU Hockey Coach Russell Gets New Job
Former Michigan Tech hockey coach Jamie Russell has been named the head coach of the Elmira Jackals of the East Coast Hockey League. Russell coached the Huskies from 2003 to 2011… and was named WCHA Coach of the Year in 2007. He’s spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Providence College. The Jackals are the ECHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League and the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. Find out more about Russell’s new job here.
