Wentz Struggles as Tigers Fall – Thursday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Rangers teed off early on Joey Wentz, and cruised to a 10-2 victory over the Tigers last night. Texas scored four runs in the first inning, and two more in the third. Garrett Hill allowed the other four runs over two innings of relief. Detroit avoided the shutout with a two-out, two-run Kerry Carpenter home run in the ninth. Infielder Jonathan Schoop finished the game on the mound for Detroit, making his major league pitching debut.

The Tigers visit the Rangers again this afternoon. Detroit has not confirmed a starter. Cody Bradford will pitch for Texas. Coverage will begin at 1:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit’s pitching shuffle continued yesterday. Hill was brought up from Toledo. Anthony Misiewicz, who had spent one day on the major league roster, was sent back down.

Christian Yelich had three hits and drove in two runs, as the Brewers outscored the Mets 5-2 last evening.

The Brewers visit the Mets again tonight. Adrian Houser will start against Max Scherzer.

Joey Wiemer left last night’s game after he was hit on the hand by a pitch in the eighth inning. X-rays showed no serious damage, and he’s considered day-to-day.

Milwaukee sent reliever Peter Strzelecki down to Nashville yesterday, and called up reliever Thomas Pannone.

• Bucko’s/Labatts got past A and S Industrial/Loukus Tech 11-9, then downed Auto Pro/Thermoanalytics 18-5.
• Pat’s Foods/Bucko’s v Superior Lube, then v Downtowner Two – no report.

Fast Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League action last night…
• Superior Service defeated Gold Standard 8-4. Isabelle Cleary was the winning pitcher, and had a triple and a single. Milly Loukus hit a home run. For Gold Standard, Payton Goldsworthy had a triple and two singles.
• REL v JB’s – rained out.
• Superior National Bank v Tervo Agency – rained out.

Twilight League Baseball

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball tonight…
• Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker faces REL-Mohawk Technology at the Wolverine field.

NHL

The Red Wings added some offense and some defense in the opening round of the NHL Amateur Draft last night. With the ninth pick, they selected center Nate Danielson, a native of Edmonton, who led the WHL Brandon Wheat Kings in goals and assists last season. With the 17th selection, Detroit claimed Axel Sandin Pellikka from Sweden, considered to be one of the best offensive defensemen in the draft.

The Blackhawks opened the draft by taking center Connor Bedard. The Ducks grabbed Swedish center Leo Carlsson with the second pick, and University of Michigan center Adam Fantilli was selected at number-three by the Sharks.

Rounds two through seven will take place today. Detroit has picks 41, 42 and 43 in the second round, and five additional picks in the later rounds.
