Weiss Wins Markham Run – Saturday Sports Wrap

The Tigers shut down the Twins 7-1 last evening. Matt Vierling slammed two solo home runs, and Javier Báez hit a three-run shot. On a “bullpen” night, Mason Englert pitched the second and third innings, gave up the only Minnesota run, and earned the win.

The Tigers visit the Twins again this afternoon. Joey Wentz will start against José De León. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers held off the Pirates 5-4 last evening. Milwaukee scored three times in the first, but it was Joey Weimer’s solo home run in the sixth that provided the winning margin. Julio Teheran gave up two runs over six innings, and got the win.

The Brewers host the Pirates again this afternoon. Wade Miley returns from the injury list to pitch against Mitch Keller.

Running

Houghton’s Eric Weiss won the Thatcher Markham Memorial 5k run at Bridgefest last evening. Weiss finished 26 seconds ahead of Chassell’s Kolson Kytta, with Hancock’s Nik Thomas placing third. Kristen Monahan of Houghton was the top women’s finisher, followed by Tess Rautiola of Chassell. See full results here.
