High School
Marquette dominated the U.P. Alpine Skiing championships yesterday, claiming both the boys and girls championships. The Houghton boys placed second, and the girls third. Individually, Eli Heathman placed second in the slalom, and third in the giant slalom. Jack Haeussler placed fourth in the slalom.
It was the final competition of the season for the team. Haeussler, Heathman and Rachel Sun will compete for individual honors at the state championship Monday.
Tonight’s regional hockey games have been postponed until tomorrow – Houghton v Jeffers at 5:30, Calumet v Hancock at 7:30, with doubleheader coverage beginning at 5:10 on KBear 102.3.
In girls basketball last night…
• Hancock smothered L’Anse 71-28. The Bulldogs improve to 18-1.

College Basketball
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team begins play in the quarterfinals of the Coast to Coast Athletic Conference tournament today. The Lions are seeded fourth in the tourney, and will open against fifth-seed Salisbury at 5:00. Third-seeded Mary Washington will take on sixth-seed Mount Mary in the other quarterfinal. If the Lions win today, they’ll take on unbeaten top seed Christopher Newport in the semifinals tomorrow at 5:00.
College Softball
The Finlandia softball team begins its season at the Blue Angel Dome Invitational in Peoria, Illinois today. The Lions will face Mount Mary at 6:00, and Dominican at 8:00.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team has a new assistant coach. Mallory Nickelson was a four-year starter at Roosevelt University, and was recently an assistant coach for two seasons at Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
NHL
The Red Wings host the Rangers tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Wings have sent Jakub Vrana back to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Vrana’s recent call-up resulted in him playing in just one game. He missed much of the season after he entered the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program. His demotion could make room for the return of Lucas Raymond, who has missed a half-dozen games because of a lower body injury.
Dylan Larkin will not be suspended for his illegal cross-check on T.J. Oshie during Tuesday’s win over the Capitals. Larkin will be fined $5,000 for the hit, which drew a five-minute penalty and a game misconduct.
NBA
The Pistons return from the all-star break when they visit the Magic tonight.
