Detroit Tigers Circle LogoMax Scherzer struck out 20, as the Detroit Tigers fell to the Washington Nationals 3-2 last night. Scherzer joined Randy Johnson, Kerry Wood and Roger Clemens as the only pitchers to strike out 20 in a nine-inning game. 96 of his 119 pitches were strikes. The Tigers did collect six hits, including solo home runs by Jose Iglesias and J.D. Martinez. Jordan Zimmermann gave up three runs over seven innings, and took the loss.

The Tigers open a four-game set at Baltimore tonight. Mike Pelfrey will start against Ubaldo Jimenez. Hear the first pitch at 7:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Detroit has brought pitcher Daniel Norris up from Toledo. He’ll provide an extra bullpen arm. Outfielder Tyler Collins has been sent back down to the Mud Hens.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost 3-2 to the Miami Marlins last night. All of Miami’s runs came in the fifth inning off Brewers’ starter Chase Anderson, who gave up just three hits over six innings.

The Brewers return home to open a four-game series against the Padres tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against James Shields.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs, the Blues advanced to the conference finals with a 6-1 victory over the Stars in the seventh game of their second-round series last night.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs last night, the Warriors moved into the conference finals by defeating the Portland Trailblazers 125-121 in the fifth game of their second round series. The Raptors got past the Heat 99-91, and lead their second-round series three games to two.

Walikainen Honored by Guts Frisbee
USA Guts FrisbeeLocal guts Frisbee player and promoter Dennis Walikainen has been named the recipient of the 2016 Bradshaw Award by the USA Guts Board of Directors. Walikainen has been a tireless promoter of disc sport in the Copper Country, serving as director of the International Frisbee Tournament, and curator of the Frisbee Hall of Fame at the Calumet Colosseum. He has also been a member of the USA Guts Board of Directors and the Hall of Fame Nomination Committee. Walikainen will be honored July 9th during the 59th annual International Frisbee Tournament at Agassiz Field in Calumet. For more about Walikainen and the Bradshaw Award, click here. He will also be one of Rick Allen’s guests Sunday on Copper Country Today.

Lake Trout Classic Deadline Approaching
Sunday is the deadline to register for the Ontonagon Lake Trout Classic, which will be held May 20th through 22nd. Events include the Ladies Powder Puff tourney that Friday, and the Lake Trout Classic that Saturday and Sunday. To register, call 884-2770, email larry@greigstackleshop.com or click here.
