Volleyball Playoff Wins for Kings, ‘Dogs, Lakes and Vikings – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

District championship matches have been set in the state high school volleyball tournament. In semifinal action last night…
• In Division Two, Houghton’s season ended with a hard-fought 3-2 (25-18, 31-29, 21-25, 23-25, 15-13) loss to Kingsford. The Flivvers will face Negaunee for the district title tomorrow.
• In Division Three, Calumet dispatched Jeffers 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-13). Maddie Torola had 11 kills and three blocks. Allie Bjorn had nine kills and three blocks. Caitlyn Strom had five kills and two blocks. Laina Kariniemi had 25 assists and six aces. The Jets suffered just their second loss of the season. Hancock eliminated West Iron County 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-14). The Copper Kings and Bulldogs will meet for the district title tomorrow at 6:00 at Calumet. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• In Division Four, District 98, Lake Linden-Hubbell blanked L’Anse 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-20). Maddie Buschell led the Lakes with nine kills. Abi Codere had five aces. Payton Goldsworthy had 20 assists and 11 digs. Baraga cruised past Chassell 3-0 (25-13, 25-9, 25-7). The Lakes will host the Vikings for the district title tomorrow at 6:00.
• In Division Four, District 97, Forest Park stopped Bessemer 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-19), and Ewen-Trout Creek’s season ended with a tight 3-0 (29-27, 25-16, 28-26) loss to Wakefield-Marenisco. The Cardinals will host the Trojans in the district title match tomorrow.

An effort is underway to replace the aging bleachers at the Baraga High School gym. A kickoff dinner and dance will be held Saturday at 6:00 at the Pressbox in Baraga. The cost is $40 per ticket. For more details and information about purchasing tickets, click here.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer squad plays at Northern Michigan this afternoon at 3:00. It’s the final game of the regular season for both teams.

College Basketball

The Northern Michigan women’s basketball fell to Wisconsin-Green Bay 63-56 in an exhibition match last night.

NHL

The Red Wings host the Panthers tonight. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons couldn’t hold an 18-point lead, and suffered a 110-101 loss to the Trail Blazers last night. Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 30 points

The Pistons visit the Pelicans tonight.

MLB

The Rangers won their first World Series title last night, with a 5-0 victory over the Diamondbacks in game five. Texas shortstop Corey Seager was named the series’ Most Valuable Player. He was also the series MVP in 2020, when he played for the Dodgers.

NFL

In tonight’s NFL game, the Steelers entertain the Titans. Will Levis will start at quarterback for Tennessee, with Ryan Tannehill sidelined by an ankle injury. Coverage will begin at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

Ski Tigers

The Copper Country Ski Tigers will hold their fall outdoor gear swap Saturday at the Houghton High School multi-purpose room. Drop off items to be sold between 8:30 and 11:15 am. Ski Tigers members can shop between 11:30 and 12:00. The sale is open to the public from noon to 1:30 pm. There is a 15 percent commission, with a $75 maximum per item, charged on all items sold. All proceeds are used to support the Copper Country Ski Tigers racing teams. Ski Tigers registration is open at their website.
