Volleyball Wins for Houghton, Calumet – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night…
– Houghton swept Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-21).
– Calumet defeated West Iron County 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 25-11). Lea Bjorn had 18 kills, and Amber Johnson had seven aces and 36 digs.
– Hancock v L’Anse – not reported.
– Chassell v Wakefield-Marenisco – not reported.
– Baraga v Dollar Bay-Tamarack City – not reported.
– Ontonagon v Watersmeet – not reported.
– Ewen-Trout Creek v Bessemer – not reported.

In cross country, the Chassell girls ran to an easy victory at the Houghton Invitational on the Tech Trails yesterday. Calumet finished second, and West Iron County third. Lela Rautiola of the Panthers took top individual honors, 18 seconds better than Calumet’s Clarity Gipp. The boys side of the meet went to Houghton, with Gogebic second, and Chassell third. Gremlins Clayton Sayen, Seth Helman and Leif Odegard claimed the top three individual spots. Link to full results here.

In high school football tonight…
– Calumet plays at L’Anse. Pregame coverage will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Hancock travels to Gwinn.

– Houghton plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
– Ontonagon faces Bear Lake at Brimley.

– Houghton, Hancock, and Calumet travel to the Suttons Bay Invitational.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell, and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City play at the Ironwood/Hurley Invitational.

In hockey, Team Copper Country has games at Duluth this weekend.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team is in Oshkosh for games against Simpson College this afternoon, Maranatha Baptist University tonight, and Wisconsin-Platteville and Saint Olaf College tomorrow.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team plays at Lawrence University tomorrow.

The Finlandia football team hosts Robert Morris-Peoria tomorrow. Pregame coverage begins at 12:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team faces Union College at the Icebreaker Tournament in Duluth tonight. The host Bulldogs will play Minnesota in the other preliminary game.

The MTU volleyball team entertains Ashland today at 5:00, and hosts Tiffin tomorrow at 4:00.

The Huskies football team plays at Northwood tomorrow afternoon.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team plays at Lake Superior State tonight and tomorrow night.

The Wildcats football team entertains Ashland tomorrow afternoon.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings christened their new arena with a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild in their season-opener last night. Anthony Mantha had a goal and two assists. Jimmy Howard earned his 200th career win in goal. The Wings skate at Ottawa tomorrow night. Hear the game on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Atlanta Hawks in a preseason game tonight. We’ll broadcast selected Pistons regular-season games on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
The American League Divisional Playoff Series opened last night. The Astros beat the Red Sox 8-2 – Justin Verlander pitched six strong innings to get the win. The Indians blanked the Yankees 4-0. Both of those series continue today.

The National League Divisional Series opens tonight, when the Cubs face the Nationals.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Patriots edged the Buccaneers 19-14.

On Sunday, the Lions host the Panthers in a 1:00 game on 99.3 The Lift. The Packers visit the Cowboys for a 4:25 game.
