High School
In high school volleyball last night…
• Calumet swept Houghton 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-21). Jackie Kiilunen had 11 kills and 17 digs for the Copper Kings. Maddie Torola added eight kills. Caitlyn Strom seven kills and 13 digs. Laina Kariniemi had 28 assists.
• Hancock dispatched Gwinn 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-17).
• Jeffers defeated Ewen-Trout Creek 3-0 (25-8, 25-12, 25-16). Kaeda Rajala led the Jets with 15 kills. Sara Johnson had 15 assists and 19 digs. Reegan Kinnunen notched 21 digs.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell blanked L’Anse 3-0 (25-7, 25-7, 25-12). Abi Codere led the Lakes with eight kills. Alli Corrigan scored eight aces, and Payton Goldsworthy had 19 assists.
• Chassell lost to West Iron County 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-9). Kylee Sohlden had four kills and eight digs for the Panthers.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fell to Ironwood 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-16).
On the volleyball schedule tonight…
• Baraga plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
Houghton continued to dominate the cross country scene yesterday, with wins for both the boys and girls teams at the Westwood Invitational at the Wawanowin Golf Course.
• The boys easily outran Negaunee. Hancock placed fourth. Gremlins grabbed four of the top-10 individual positions, with Birk Seagren first, and Ben Hemmer third. David Bylkas of Hancock finished ninth.
• The girls cruised past second-place Hancock. Gremlins took five of the top-10 slots, with Tessa Rautiola second, and Roman Peterlin third. Hancock’s Ella Keranen and Rayna Towles placed fifth and sixth.

The Houghton soccer team scored two late goals to salvage a 4-4 tie against Iron Mountain yesterday. Ethan Heckel had a hat trick for the Gremlins, and Conner Polkky scored once.
NHL
The Red Wings dropped a 4-2 preseason game to the Blackhawks last night. Joe Veleno scored both Detroit goals. Chicago outshot Detroit 34-19.

MLB
The Brewers opened the baseball playoffs with a 6-3 loss to the Diamondbacks last night. All three Milwaukee runs came in the first two innings – two on a Tyrone Taylor home run. Corbin Burnes couldn’t hold the lead, allowing three runs in the third, and another in the fourth. That best-of-three series continues in Milwaukee tonight. Freddy Peralta will start against Zac Gallen.
In the other National League Wild Card Series…
• The Phillies stopped the Marlins 4-1.
In the American League…
• The Rangers blanked the Rays 4-0.
• The Twins downed the Blue Jays 3-1.
All of those series continue this evening.
The Tigers will have a new television play-by-play voice next year. After five seasons in the booth, Matt Shepherd has been fired by the team and television partner Bally Sports, who said they want to move in a different direction.
Running
The Keweenaw Color Run will begin Saturday at 9:30 at the Houghton Waterfront Pier, and will kick off the second annual Houghton Fall Fest. The run is a fun, untimed 5k walk/run event. During the run, participants will be blasted head to toe in different colored powers at various stations along the route. To learn more and sign up, click here.
