Volleyball Wins for Kings and Bulldogs – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Houghton shut down Westwood 3-0 (25-7, 25-9, 25-10).
• Calumet swept Iron Mountain 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-7). Helen Beiring had 18 kills and 2 aces; Allie Bjorn had 11 kills, 2 aces and 8 digs; Laina Kariniemi had 32 assists; Caitlyn Strom had 5 kills; and Kailey Halonen had 5 aces and 14 digs.
• Hancock blanked Jeffers 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-14).
• Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Bessemer 3-1 (19-25, 25-14, 25-14, 25-20).
• L’Anse fell 3-0 to Ewen-Trout Creek (23-25, 17-25, 16-25).

In volleyball tonight…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City entertains Wakefield-Marenisco.

In volleyball tomorrow…
• Houghton competes at the Gladstone Rock Invitational.
• Calumet plays at the Ashwaubenon Invitational.
• Baraga, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Jeffers and Ontonagon play at the Baraga Invitational.

At Houghton’s Bill Fezzy Memorial Invitational cross country meet yesterday…
• On the boys side, Houghton took team honors, followed by Jeffers, Ironwood, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City and Republic-Michigamme. Amos Norland of the Blue Bolts claimed top individual honors, finishing 25 seconds ahead of Watersmeet’s William Snow. Isaiah Lawson of the Gremlins placed third.
• On the girls side, Houghton easily outscored Hancock, with Calumet third, and Ironwood fourth. Tessa Rautiola and Lily Ross of the Gremlins finished first and second individually.

• Houghton travels to Iron Mountain. Coverage begins at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Calumet entertains Westwood. Coverage starts at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• Hancock visits Negaunee.
• L’Anse journeys to Gwinn.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Norway.

Ontonagon’s scheduled game against Carney-Nadeau tomorrow has been canceled.

West Iron County has canceled the remainder of its varsity football season because of low numbers and injuries. That includes the games against Calumet next week, and Houghton September 29th. The Wykons will continue their JV program this season, and hope to resume varsity competition next fall.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team plays at St. Thomas tomorrow.

The Finlandia University football squad visits Concordia-Chicago.

College Soccer

The Finlandia women’s soccer team shaded Crown College 1-0 yesterday afternoon. Sam Linteo scored the game’s only goal. The Lions play at Martin Luther tomorrow, and Saint Scholastica Sunday.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team travels to Blackburn College in Illinois tomorrow.

The Michigan Tech soccer team plays at Purdue Northwest this afternoon, and Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team entertains Davenport this evening at 6, and Grand Valley tomorrow at 3.

The Finlandia University volleyball team competes at the Blue Angel Blast in Milwaukee this weekend. The Lions will face Lawrence this afternoon, Mount Mary this evening, and Alverno and Anderson tomorrow.

MLB

The Tigers had yesterday off, and open a series at Kansas City tonight. Joey Wentz will start against Daniel Lynch. Coverage begins at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers swept their doubleheader against the Giants yesterday. In the opener, Corbin Burnes gave up a run on three hits over eight masterful innings in a 2-1 victory. He struck out 14 batters. In the nightcap, Milwaukee scored three times in the first inning, and held on for a 4-2 win. Starter Freddy Peralta left the game after two innings with a shoulder problem. He’ll be evaluated today.

The Brewers host the Reds tonight. Jason Alexander will start against Nick Lodolo.

NFL

In last night’s NFL game, the Bills routed the defending Super Bowl champion Rams 31-10.

The Lions open their season Sunday at home against the Eagles. Kickoff is at 1 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers begin their campaign with a 4:25 game at Minnesota Sunday.
