Volleyball Wins for Hancock, LL-H, Jeffers – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last evening…
• Hancock cruised past Iron Mountain 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-16).
• Lake Linden-Hubbell blanked Ontonagon 3-0 (25-19, 25-11, 25-16). Abi Codere led the Lakes with nine kills. Payton Goldsworthy had six aces and 22 assists. Ashlyn Steves had 14 digs.
• Jeffers swept L’Anse 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-15). Kaeda Rajala and Mia Nordstrom each had six kills for the Jets. Taylor Heinonen had 11 assists, Mia Nordstrom had 32 digs, and Sara Johnson served six aces. Brooklyn Dompier led the Purple Hornets with 12 kills, and Mylee Londo added 10.

On the volleyball schedule tonight…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City plays at Baraga.

Calumet volleyball competes at the Duluth Invitational tomorrow.

Houghton continued its local cross country domination yesterday, as both Gremlins teams earned victories at the Dollar Bay/Chassell Invitational at the Chassell Trails.
• The boys team nosed out Jeffers by two points. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City was third, Chassell fifth, and Hancock sixth. Landon Larson of the Jets placed first individually, 21 seconds better than Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta.
• The Gremlin girls breezed past second-place Hancock. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City finished sixth. Houghton claimed five of the top 10 positions, with Tessa Rautiola first, and Roman Peterlin second.

• Calumet travels to Kingsford. Coverage begins at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• Houghton entertains Menominee. Coverage will start at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Hancock welcomes Negaunee.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at North Central.
• Ontonagon hosts Ironwood.

In football tomorrow…
• L’Anse journeys to Manistique for a 1:00 game.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team journeys to Upper Iowa tomorrow.

The Northern Michigan football team plays at Quincy University tomorrow.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team plays at Parkside tonight, and Purdue Northwest tomorrow.

The Northern Michigan volleyball squad visits Purdue Northwest tonight, and Parkside tomorrow.

College Soccer

The Tech soccer team plays at Saginaw Valley State this afternoon, and Ferris State Sunday.

The Northern women’s soccer team competes at Ferris this afternoon, and Saginaw Valley State Sunday. The Northern men’s soccer team plays at Purdue Northwest this afternoon, and Parkside on Sunday.

MLB

Tarik Skubal struck out 10, as the Tigers downed the Athletics 7-3 last night. Skubal allowed just two hits over seven scoreless innings. Oakland’s runs came in the ninth off Brenan Hanifee, who made his major league debut. Andy Ibáñez had two hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs.

The Tigers visit the Athletics again tonight. Sawyer Gipson-Long will pitch against Ken Waldichuk. Coverage will start at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Tigers have hired a general manager. Jeff Greenberg spent 11 seasons in the Cubs’ front office, and the past 16 months as associate GM with the NHL Blackhawks. He’ll work under president of baseball operations Scott Harris. 

The Brewers completed a series sweep of the Cardinals, with a 6-0 victory yesterday. Wade Miley scattered three hits over six shutout innings. Blake Perkins and Victor Caratini homered.

The Brewers visit the Marlins this evening. Corbin Burnes will start for the Crew.

The Cubs lost, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division increases to eight games over Chicago. Any combination of two Brewers wins or Cubs losses gives the division title to Milwaukee.

 Christian Yelich says he’s hoping to return to the field this weekend. He’s missed much of the past two weeks with back tightness.

NFL

In last night’s NFL game, the 49ers dumped the Giants 30-12.

The Lions host the Falcons in a 1:00 game Sunday on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers entertain the Saints in a 1:00 game Sunday.

Guts Frisbee

The local guts Frisbee season ends with the Keweenaw Classic tomorrow. Action begins at noon at Calumet Waterworks Park. It’s an informal tournament, with teams being made up on the spot by mixing experienced players with newer players. All are welcome. Bring a picnic lunch.
