Volleyball Wins for Hancock, Calumet, Jeffers – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…

  • Hancock stuffed Houghton 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-14).
  • Jeffers defeated Wakefield-Marenisco 3-1 (20-25, 26-24, 25-14, 25-22). Mia Nordstrom had 17 kills, 20 digs and three blocks for the Jets. Taylor Heinonen had 18 assists, two aces and four kills. Brooke Pietila had three blocks and six kills. Sammi Pennala recorded three aces.
  • Calumet got past Marquette 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 27-25). Allie Bjorn led the Copper Kings with 14 kills, four aces, 21 digs and two blocks. Maddie Torola added 10 kills, five aces, 15 digs and two blocks. Jackie Kiilunen had 9 kills, 18 digs and three blocks, Grace Keranen four kills, and four blocks, Bella Coppo 34 assists and 10 digs, and Jess Anderson 20 digs and four aces.
  • Ontonagon v Watersmeet – no report.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek blanked Bessemer 3-0.

On the volleyball schedule tonight, Chassell plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.

In volleyball tomorrow…

  • Houghton travels to the Wrightstown Invitational.
  • Jeffers competes at the Escanaba Invitational.

The Houghton boys soccer team lost 3-0 to Marquette yesterday, and will play at the U.P. Invitational at Marquette tomorrow.

In high school football tonight…

  • Calumet plays at Houghton. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
  • Hancock hosts Kingsford.
  • L’Anse travels to Bark River-Harris.
  • Ontonagon plays at Ironwood.

Tomorrow, Lake Linden-Hubbell entertains North Central.

The McAfee Field painting project will continue tomorrow, as volunteers work to change the color scheme from Finlandia University blue and white to Hancock crimson and gold. Athletic director Ryan Towles tells us workers can begin arriving at 10:00. No advance sign-up is necessary. Towles thanked McGann Building Supply for providing much of the paint and other supplies needed for the project.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team hosts Saginaw Valley State this afternoon at 5:00.

Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team hosts Ferris State this afternoon at 3:00.

College Volleyball

The Tech volleyball team welcomes Lake Superior State tonight at 7:00, and Saginaw Valley State tomorrow at 2:00.

The NMU volleyball squad entertains Saginaw Valley State tonight at 6:30, and Lake Superior State tomorrow at 4:00.

College Football

The MTU football team hosts Wayne State in the annual homecoming game tomorrow at noon.

The NMU football squad entertains Saginaw Valley State tomorrow at 1:00.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team will host Northern Michigan for an exhibition contest tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 6:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

MLB

The Brewers’ season ended last night with a 4-2 loss to the Mets in game three of their wild card playoff series. Milwaukee pitchers tossed eight two-hit shutout innings, and took the lead with solo home runs by Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick in the bottom of the seventh. In the top of the ninth, though, New York erupted for four runs off closer Devin Williams, including three on a homer by Pete Alonso.

The Tigers will open their American League Divisional Series tomorrow at Cleveland. Detroit has not yet named a starter. Tanner Bibee will pitch for the Guardians. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL

The Red Wings dropped a 2-0 decision to the Maple Leafs in a preseason contest last night. Cam Talbot made 23 saves, but took the loss in net.

The Wings host the Senators tonight. Listen for regular-season Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

In last night’s NFL game, Kirk Cousins threw for 509 yards and four touchdowns, as the Falcons got past the Buccaneers 36-30 in overtime. 

The Packers visit the Rams for a 4:25 game Sunday.

The Lions have this weekend off.
