Volleyball Wins for Gremlins, Lakes – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball yesterday…

  • Houghton swept Gwinn 3-0 (25-17 25-15 25-5). Laney Johnson had seven aces and 16 assists, Chloe Serafin had five kills and five aces, and Emmy Pietila had 11 digs.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell dispatched Chassell 3-0 (25-9, 25–14, 25-10). Emily Burnham led the Lakes with five kills. Ashlyn Steves had 10 aces and 13 digs. 

On the volleyball schedule today…

  • Baraga entertains Wakefield-Marenisco.

Jeffers hosted the first cross country meet of the season yesterday at the Kilpela farm…

  • The Jets claimed the boys title, easily outscoring runner-up Houghton. They were followed by Ironwood, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Calumet, Gogebic and Hancock. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta took individual honors. Landon Larson from Jeffers was runner-up. Benjamin Henner paced the Gremlins with a fourth-place finish.
  • Houghton took the girls crown, with Hancock in second place. Ewen-Trout Creek came in third, followed by Ironwood, Gogebic, Baraga, Calumet and West Iron County. The Gremlins took three of the top four positions, with Tessa Rautiola medaling, Roman Trevino-Peterlin third, and Sela Niska fourth. Hancock’s Ella Keranen, Rayna Towles and Alena Pietila took the next three positions.

The high school football season opens this evening…

  • Houghton entertains Iron Mountain. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
  • Calumet hosts West Iron County. Coverage will start at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
  • Hancock visits L’Anse.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell opens at Hurley.
  • Ontonagon begins its season tomorrow at home against Carney-Nadeau.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team begins its season tonight on the road at Bemidji State.

Northern Michigan hosts Minnesota Duluth for their season-opener.

MLB

The Tigers grabbed an early lead, and held off the Angels 3-2 last night. Spencer Torkelson blasted a two-run homer in the second inning. Kerry Carpenter singled home Jake Rogers with the winning run in the third. On another bullpen night, Mason Englert opened with two scoreless innings. Kenta Maeda took over in the third, and pitched into the seventh. He gave up a two-run homer in the sixth, but earned the win.

The Tigers have won six straight, and host the Angels again this afternoon. Keider Montero will start against Jack Kochanowicz. Coverage will begin at 12:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Casey Mize still seems to be on track to start tomorrow night’s game against the Red Sox. He’s missed two months with a hamstring strain.

The Brewers plated five runs in the fifth inning, and outlasted the Giants 5-3 last night. William Contreras homered. Freddy Peralta gave up two hits and struck out eight over six shutout innings.

Those teams play again this afternoon in Milwaukee. Aaron Civale will start against Hayden Birdsong.

NFL

After initially indicating that Greg Joseph had won the Packers’ placekicking job, the team changed direction yesterday and decided to go with rookie Brayden Narveson, whom they claimed off waivers from the Titans. Joseph has been released. Narveson had an excellent preseason with Tennessee, but was unable to unseat incumbent Nick Folk.

Jake Fromm will be the Lions’ third-string quarterback. Fromm was Detroit’s backup in 2022, then missed  all of last season with an injury. He was added to the practice squad yesterday, over Nate Sudfeld. Detroit also added receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones to the practice squad yesterday.

NHL

The Red Wings have brought an enforcer into training camp. Ten-year veterans Austin Watson will get a tryout. He appeared in 33 games for the Lightning last season, collecting two goals, two assists, and 93 penalty minutes.
