High School

In high school volleyball last night…

  • In a battle between the two top-ranked teams in the U.P., number-one Calumet outlasted number-two Kingsford 3-1 (26-24, 25-19, 18-25, 25-18). Maddie Torola led the Copper Kings with 19 kills, two aces, 13 digs and five blocks. Allie Bjorn added 11 kills, two aces and 14 digs. Jackie Kiilunen had 10 kills, three aces and 13 digs. Jess Anderson had 12 digs, and Bella Coppo had 39 assists.
  • Dollar Bay swept Ontonagon 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-21). For the Blue Bolts, Macy Jurgensen had 24 assists, Kelsey Jaehnig had 12 service points, and Kiera Isaacson had 12 service points, 12 kills, and 11 digs.
  • Jeffers downed Ironwood 3-1 (25-14, 20-25, 25-22, 28-26). Liz Halonen had 19 assists and 12 digs for the Jets. Taylor Heinonen had 12 assists, three aces and five kills; Mia Nordstrom had two blocks, 17 digs and 16 kills; Reegan Kinnunen had 22 digs; Sammi Pennala had three aces, six blocks and three kills.
  • Chassell defeated Watersmeet 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-15). For the Panthers, Elli Kuntze had seven kills and seven aces, Oriana Olson had six kills and two aces, Dusty Lippold had five kills, Megan Holombo had two kills, five aces, and seven digs, and Sylvia Aho had two aces and 19 assists.
  • L’Anse lost to Wakefield-Marenisco 3-1.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek battled past Baraga 3-2.

At the cross country meet at Negaunee yesterday…

  • Calumet placed fourth on the boys side, with Hancock seventh. Andrew Junttila of the Copper Kings took first place individually. 
  • Hancock won the girls team title, with Calumet third. Ella Keranen of the Bulldogs took individual honors. Elli Harju led the Copper Kings’ effort with a seventh place finish.

Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Jeffers, Chassell and Baraga will be among the teams competing at a cross country meet at Ewen-Trout Creek this afternoon.

College Soccer

The Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team will host St. Cloud State this afternoon.

MLB

The Tigers held off the Astros 3-1 in the opening game of their wild card playoff series yesterday. Tarik Skubal struck out six over six shutout innings. Detroit scored all their runs with two outs in the second inning, on RBI singles from Jake Rogers, Trey Sweeney and Matt Vierling. Houston threatened in the bottom of the ninth, scoring one run and loading the bases with two outs, before Beau Brieske got Jason Heyward to line out to Spencer Torkelson to end the game.

Game two of the best-of-three set will be played this afternoon in Houston. Tyler Holton will open for Detroit. Hunter Brown will start for the Astros. Coverage will begin at 2:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Mets scored five runs with two outs in the fifth inning, and dumped the Brewers 8-4 in their playoff opener. Starter Freddy Peralta gave up three runs over just four innings. Brice Turang had three hits, and scored twice.

That series continues this evening in Milwaukee. Frankie Montas will pitch against Sean Manaea.

NHL

The Red Wings edged the Penguins 2-1 in preseason play last night. Amadeus Lombardi and Nate Danielson scored for Detroit. Ville Husso made 43 saves.
