Volleyball Tourney Opens Tonight – Monday Sports Wrap

VolleyballHigh School Volleyball Tourney Opens Tonight
The high school volleyball tournament opens tonight. In Class D play at Lake Linden, the Lakes face Chassell. Class C tournament play at Calumet begins tomorrow. In Class B, Menominee entertains Kingsford tonight. Houghton will open play Wednesday night at Gladstone.

Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Sarah Audette has been named the Mountain Lakes Conference Volleyball Most Valuable Player. Audette led the Lakes to an unbeaten conference record (10-0), and the conference title. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City coach Emily Viola was named Coach of the Year. The Bays finished second (6-4) in the conference. Baraga (5-5) and Ontonagon (5-5) tied for third, followed by Chassell (4-6) and Ewen-Trout Creek (0-10).

High School Football Playoffs
Calumet’s season will continue, but Lake Linden-Hubbell’s high school football playoff run ended Saturday.
– At Dick Harris Field in Harrison, Robbie Erkkila scored three touchdowns, as the Copper Kings eliminated the host Hornets 30-21. Calumet will play at Menominee on Saturday. Kickoff is at 2:00 Eastern, 1:00 Central. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Jordan Sodergren scored with a little more than two minutes remaining to give Bark River-Harris a 14-6 victory over Lake Linden-Hubbell. The Lakes end their season with a record of 7-3.

UPSSA Football Dream Team Announced
No Copper Country football players were named to the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Dream Team this fall. The Dream Team includes the best players from all teams in the U.P. The best of the remaining players are assigned to the Large School and Small School All-U.P. teams. The Large School team includes guard Ben Eskola, running back Robbie Erkkila and linebacker Kaden Kangas of Calumet; and linebacker Ben Collaer from Houghton. The Small School team includes running back Brandon Kemppainen from L’Anse, and three Lake Linden-Hubbell players – defensive end Lucas Klein, linebacker Nic Walli, and defensive back Blake Dupuis.

Special Mention honors went to Tyler Loukus of Calumet, Michael Anderson of L’Anse, and Lucas Klein of Lake Linden-Hubbell. Honorable Mention votes went to Arthur Lyons and Tyler Roose of Lake Linden-Hubbell.

The 17th-ranked MTU hockey team scored three goals in the first period, and completed a sweep of 15th-ranked University of Michigan with a 6-2 victory Saturday night. Tanner Kero opened the scoring, and five other Huskies each scored a goal apiece. Jamie Phillips stopped 26 shots. The win followed a 4-1 victory Friday night.

Charlie Leffingwell scored five touchdowns, as the Michigan Tech football team defeated Tiffin 35-17 on Saturday. Playing in a stiff wind, the Huskies kept the ball on the ground, and rolled up 262 rushing yards. 221 of those came from Leffingwell, who matched a career high.

The Michigan Tech soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a 1-0 loss at Northwood Saturday. Tech finished in a third-place tie in the GLIAC with a 10-3-2 overall record (8-2-2 conference), and will open the conference tournament at home against Walsh tomorrow afternoon at 2:00.

The MTU volleyball team lost to Saginaw Valley State 3-0 (25-17, 25-21 and 25-23) Friday night, and fell to Wayne State 3-2 (25-21, 25-16, 12-25, 22-25, 7-15) Saturday afternoon.

NMU Athletics LogoThe winless Alabama-Huntsville hockey team played unbeaten Northern Michigan University to a 1-1 tie Friday night. The Wildcats defeated the Chargers 4-1 on Saturday.

The NMU football team gave up 21 points in the final quarter, and lost to Walsh 27-24 Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers scored the winning touchdown in the final minute.

Finlandia LionsThe Finlandia University women’s hockey team opened its season with a 7-1 loss at Concordia-Wisconsin Friday night. The Lions were shut out in Mequon 2-0 Saturday afternoon. The men’s team opened its season with an 11-0 loss at Wisconsin-Stevens Point Saturday night. The Pointers scored five goals in the first five minutes.

The Lions’ women’s soccer team ended its regular season with a 17-0 loss at Illinois Tech yesterday. Saturday’s game at Lawrence University was canceled. The Lions finish with a record of three wins and 13 losses. The Great South Athletic Conference tournament begins Friday.

The Detroit Red Wings fell to the Sabres 3-2 in a shootout yesterday. Detroit took a 2-1 lead when Pavel Datsyuk scored early in the third period, but Buffalo tied it with a Chris Stewart goal late in regulation. Henrik Zetterberg scored what appeared to be the game-winner for Detroit in overtime, but referees whistled Johan Franzen for interference, and waived the goal off. The Wings skate at Ottawa tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Fall to Nets
The Detroit Pistons are off until Wednesday, when they host the Knicks.

In NFL play, both the Lions and the Packers had this week off. In last night’s game, the Steelers dumped the Ravens 43-23. Tonight, the Colts face the Giants. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
