Volleyball Sweeps for Houghton, Calumet, Hancock and LL-H – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…

  • Houghton blanked Westwood 3-0 (25-5, 25-16, 25-23).
  • Calumet swept Iron Mountain 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-23). Allie Bjorn had 12 kills and 13 digs, Sienna Anderson 6 kills and 4 aces, Maddie Torola had 13 kills and 3 aces, and Jess Anderson had 20 digs.
  • Hancock defeated Jeffers 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-16).
  • Lake Linden downed Bessemer 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-23). Cleo Milkey had 9 kills and 9 aces for the Lakes, and Payton Goldsworthy had 20 assists. 
  • Dollar Bay fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-16, 25-14). For the Blue Bolts, Kiera Isaacson had 10 service points, 17 kills, and 22 digs. Kelsey Jaehnig had 7 blocks, and Macy Jurgenson had 25 assists and 26 digs.
  • L’Anse fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 3-1.

In volleyball tomorrow…

  • Calumet competes at the Ashwaubenon Invitational.
  • Hancock plays at The Rock Invitational at Gladstone.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, L’Anse, Baraga and Ontonagon will compete at the Baraga Invitational.

In high school football tonight…

  • Hancock plays at Houghton. After the game, fans can meet the players and coaches and get the varsity players’ autographs on posters, which will be provided. Fans are encouraged to wear orange and black. This will be the Gremlins and Bulldogs’ WestPAC conference game, but is not the Copper Bowl, which will be played in week nine. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
  • Calumet welcomes Negaunee for Homecoming. The Homecoming parade will start at 6:00 at the school, and travel to Agassiz Field via Fifth Street. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
  • L’Anse travels to Gwinn.
  • Ontonagon journeys to Newberry.

Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts North Dickinson tomorrow.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team has been picked to finish as runner-up in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association by the league’s coaches. In the CCHA preseason media poll, the Huskies were picked to finish fourth. St. Thomas won the coaches’ poll, with Bemidji State second. Bemidji State won the media poll, with St. Thomas second. Lake Superior State placed sixth in each poll. Northern Michigan finished last in the coaches’ poll, and next-to-last in the media poll.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team entertains Hillsdale tomorrow. Kickoff is at noon at Kearly Stadium.

The Northern football squad plays at Wisconsin-LaCrosse tomorrow.

College Soccer

The Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team salvaged a 2-2 draw with Lewis University yesterday.  William Uchenna and Davian Gumbs each scored their first collegiate goals.

The men’s team hosts Thomas More tomorrow.

The Northern women’s soccer team blanked Cedarville University 3-0. Brooke Pietila scored the Wildcats’ first goal just a minute into the contest.  Alyse Daavettila and Justina L’Esperance also scored. In goal, Sally Patton got the win in her first career start.

The women’s team plays at Northwood tomorrow.

College Volleyball

In the opening game of the UP North Tournament last night, the NMU volleyball team lost to Findlay 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-22).

Action continues today and tomorrow in Houghton. Here is the schedule:

Today:
• 10 a.m. – Minnesota Duluth vs. Michigan Tech
• 12:30 p.m. – Findlay vs. St. Cloud State
• 3 p.m. – Minnesota Duluth vs. Northern Michigan
• 6:30 p.m. – Findlay vs. Michigan Tech
Tomorrow:
• 10 a.m. – St. Cloud State vs. Northern Michigan
• 12:30 p.m. – Minnesota Duluth vs. Findlay
• 3 p.m. – St. Cloud State vs. Michigan Tech

MLB

The Tigers lost to the Rockies 4-2 yesterday. Tarik Skubal gave up a run on four hits over six innings. Jason Foley gave up two runs in the ninth inning, and took the loss. Spencer Torkelson had two hits, and drove in both Detroit runs.

The Tigers entertain the Orioles tonight. Zach Eflin will start for Baltimore. Detroit has not named a starter, but could bring Reese Olson off the injured list. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Skubal was hit on the right hand by a comebacker in the sixth inning. An x-ray showed no damage, but he’ll be examined more closely today. Wenceel Pérez returned after a month on the injured list. Ryan Kreidler was sent back to Toledo.

The Brewers blanked the Giants 3-0 last evening. Frankie Montas scattered two hits over six innings. Jackson Chourio homered, and became the youngest major league player ever to have a 20-homer, 20-steal season.

The Brewers visit the Diamondbacks tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Eduardo Rodriguez.

Milwaukee has brought reliever Enoli Paredes off the injured list, and sent Elvis Peguero down to Nashville.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, the Bills steamrolled the Dolphins 31-10. 

The Lions host the Buccaneers in a 1:00 game Sunday on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers welcome the Colts for a 1:00 contest Sunday.

One of the greatest Lions of all time has died. NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Joe Schmidt made 10 consecutive Pro Bowls, and helped Detroit win two NFL championships in the 1950s He went on to serve as head coach of the team for six seasons. Joe Schmidt was 92.
